Mohammad Bashir, a Chicago-based Pakistani, is no ordinary cricket fan.
The owner of a restaurant, the well-known Bashir can be seen in the stands sporting a bright green kurta cheering for Pakistan almost everywhere they play. Not even his ailing health has put a dent in his travels.
But at the 2015 World Cup, Bashir has temporarily switched his allegiance and will be praying for Indian captain MS Dhoni and India to retain the title!

Shocking as it may seem, Bashir's love for Dhoni, in particular, goes back a long way.
“At the 2014 World T20, I could not get any tickets for any of the matches, so Dhoni arranged a complimentary ticket of the final for me. He is a gem of a person. I have come to make sure he wins the World Cup. I am sure his new born baby will bring him luck,” said Bashir in an interview with Gulf News.
“I am from Karachi but I live in Chicago. My wife Rafia is from Hyderabad, India. I love Dhoni, he is my hero.”
The 63-year-old, who has replaced 'Chacha Cricket' as the 'mascot' for the Pakistani team, said Dhoni's humility had won him many fans in Pakistan.
Seeing the big demand for World Cup tickets, this time, Bashir, who has met Dhoni on several occasions now, came prepared.
“I did not want to trouble Dhoni this time, so I bought the tickets very early. I buy only the cheapest $20 tickets because that is where I can sit and shout at my loudest for my hero,” Bashir, who can be seen wearing Indian colours at some matches, said.
India, who beat Pakistan and South Africa in their first two games, will take on UAE on February 28 in Perth.

While studying in the U.S , I shared an apartment with three Indian guys. They turned out to be the most amazing guys I had come across. And Dhoni indeed seems like one of those folks you just cant hate. He is an awesome sportsman and seems like a wonderful human being.

India as a team is playing tremendous cricket. The way their top order is leading from the front is key to their success. Right now, Kohli is the best player in the event and he is capable to help his team to win the title once again under Dhoni's captaincy. Although our many Indian friends adopt biased approach whenever someone in India praises Pakistan for whatever reasons, being a Pakistani I will not do that. If India continue its current form, they are well deserved to clinch the mega event title.

Great gesture by the arch rivals. Wish the Indian Media would also publish Pro Pakstani stuff. The only issue dividing the the two countries is Kashmir...if Kashmir was resolved back in 47 neither country would have been at war.
Only suggestion is to Make the LOC a permanent border line and Valley and Siachian to Pakistan. The remaining occupied territory by Indian and Pakistan to the respective countries. Then we can all move on and enjoy the cricket matches without so much hatred or animosity.

I live in the USA and have travelled around the world and where ever indians and Pakistanis meet with each other, they are nothing but cordial and bonding. It feels good to share a good relation with each other in abroad despite of not so good relations back home and in media. May b it's just media that propagates too much. Let's not mix politics with our daily life and don't make it an epicenter of all other better and beautiful things. Cricket is one of those things and let's enjoy it without bringing politics and hatred in it. I wish pakistan very best of luck for next matches. Hope to see you in final against India. But if it happens then of course I will cheer for India

I had a Pakistani friend named Khan Bhai from SWAT who was so generous and kind that he would help me whenever he heard I have a problem. I remember a day when I was down with fever, he got me medicines driving more than 30 miles...

Iam an Indian in the US. I was just the other day at a Pakistani restaurant buying Kabobs and Biriyani and we had a hearty chat discussing the game that was on on his TV.

Its so refreshing to read such news! I am from New Delhi, India and I pray for Mohammad Bashir Saab's long and healthy life. Also, though I am from India, I sincerely wish that Pakistan ups its game at the World Cup from hereon, like it did back in 1992...nothing like seeing a final where India & Pakistan play each other! And if that happens, frankly I don't care who wins - I just want a great game of cricket!

I think we should have one cup or atlesst one series where continents play against one another i.e. Asia vs Aus vs Europe... Will be great to see india and Pakistan playing as teammates trying to take wickets , trying to score runs together...
Which also means, Indian and Pakistani fans and media will support the same team. Am I the only one finding this amazing ? :) it will also have good commercial value too for sponsors.

Bashir is a great guy, met him quite many times during my schooling in Michigan. As a student we drove 4.5 hrs to Chicago every time we had mood for biryani. His biryani joint Ghareeb Nawaz is immensely popular amongst desi community in Devon Ave, Chicago. Salaam Bashir bhai, miss the biryani a lot.

I dont deny the fact that Dhoni is a gem of a person, but this so called "Chahcha Cricket" is a disgrace. I was in the crowd at the adelaide oval (pak vs ind). He was throwing such Derogatory comments towards the indians. It a game at the end of the day. He was also trying to be flirtatious with all the good looking women around, people with families were getting uncomfortable, some even hinted that they might go to ICC and get him banned... total sleazeball.....

This story reminds me of how almost every Indian admired Miandad and wished he was on their team. Of course they could not forgive him for the last ball six for a while, but that passes away and what remains is absolute respect for the great one.
I take a diversion- The beauty of IPL is that it brings rivals together and to the local teams. Having players from Pakistan in IPL teams would greatly help the cause of bringing India and Pakistan together. I hope we can rally together and campaign to have players from Pakistan play in IPL.

I was taken in and cared for by my best friend's family for almost five years in the US. I am a loved and trusted member of his Pakistani family and we have helped each other in every way over the past 25 years. I have experienced nothing but love from Pakistan throughout my life so you can say I am Pakistan's biggest fan even if I cheer for India in cricket.

My father moved from that part of India which you call Pakistan and lived with the pain of loosing many friends back what he called home. He is 94 years old and I saw a tear roll down his cheeks when I read him this story. There is lot of bitterness in that generation and though it is hard for them 2 forget that pain of loosing a loved one or a home where they were born. But there is still some hope for the next generation as long as people like Bashir and Dhoni live in this world. I Love this story and may God give wisdom to the leaders of both these nations and realize that there will be a Pakistan only if there is an India and there will be an India only if there will be a Pakistan. So for once and for all lets all say Jai Hind, Pakistan Painda - baad .

I am an Indian and have eaten in Gareeb Nawaz- Chicago . Their food is tasty and very very reasonable . Mr. Bashir 's team makes food affordable for a common man . Just like Dhoni he is also an humble man. If there were more people like him this world would be a great place to live.

Huge respect for Dhoni for both his humility and his talent. With no disrespect to tendulkar and his records; Dhoni deserve the same respect and affection from indian fans as his contribution towards the success in ODIs is monumental
Something to learn for young pakistani and indian cricketers Kohli, Shehzad etc. Arrogance in batting is ok but to be rude, abusive and arrogant towards opposition players is not on

Shahzad, I think it is due to the inherent goodness and fondness for each other's countries which gets awakened by a heart-warming gesture. Cover it with layers of religion, Kashmir, Balochistan, ISI, RAW and other things, this bond gets buried.
So, to keep the embers of the friendship and brotherhood alive for the sake of good of both countries, there should be more such stories and exchanges. Salute Dawn for the same.
We, as the posterity of the generation of six-decades old, still are divided and the bursts of hatred engulfs our psyche; but as this episode shows, there's always hope. It is upto us how we want to leave a legacy for our posterity 20-30 years from now.

I always see tears in his eyes whenever he tries to see the images of his birthplace on computer screen. He then recalls one by one the names of his friends whom he left in India 67 yes ago.

I say this because my grandfather too came from Multan, Pakistan and his last wish was to visit once for the last time. Unfortunately me and my family couldnt fulfill that one wish and it haunts me and my father till date. Dont wish that for anyone.
And btw, general pakistan public isnt anti India. I have visited karachi and lahore and i have never met a person who hates India or Indians. Sure there are disagreements but not hatred. And the same goes for Indians too. I havent met an Indian who hates Pakistan or wishes ill for the pakistanis.

i did'n understand till the first world cup game he was pakistan loyalist.. what made him so become so loyal for INDIA.. in INDIA vs SOUTH AFRICA match.. he was speaking to INDIA nd was saying mere biwi INDIA ka hei and biwi se panga kaun lega.. its bizzare feeling for me CHACHA being so staunch supporter sinces ages for Pakistan.. and as it is'n performing changing his loyality.. i could laugh thats it. i dont find see any santa claus in him.

My request to Pakistan: There are hundreds of millions of "Aam Aadmi" like Mr Bashir (Common Man) in Pakistan who are billions of times better then a few tens or hundreds of "Badey Aadmi" (Special Category Bureaucrats), who want to use your country for their selfish means. Forget relations with India, you need to rise from your present unstable condition and choose your leaders wisely. People like Malala are the true picture of Pakistan, you must have good leaders. That's your national responsibility. Indians are learning it in a hard way, many parties in India are shown the door by the people.

I was at the ground fr the India Pakistan match. Though the atmosphere was electric, however it was pleasant experience sitting amidst a couple of Pakistani fans. There was mutual respect and everyone seemed to be enjoying themselves. Maybe we are all evolving into mature human beings and can eventually rise above our issues

Wonderful gesture from an awesome player and a wonderful fan. Hey guys i have been to Chicago several times and visited Devon street. I have to tell you it is not an exaggeration to say that one cannot differentiate between Pakistanis and Indians there. I actually bought a couple a beautiful dresses for my wife from a Pakistani store(which i did not know initially) and the owners and the helpers in the store were one of the most delightful people i came across and they made sure we were completely satisfied with our purchase. i am sure they wanted our business but the way they handled it knowing that we are Indians and the care they had in handling goes a long way.
I always wonder why it cannot be the same between the neighbors in the sub continent?
