GUJRANWALA: A leader of the Shia community and a member of the district peace committee was gunned down by four assailants here on Friday.

Reports said Syed Mazahir Ali Bukhari along with his nephew, Haider Ali Shah, was returning to his house after attending a majlis at a Kalarabadi imambargah. As their vehicle reached near Hafizabad Road, the unidentified assailants opened fire, killing Mazahir Bukhari instantly while his nephew luckily remained unhurt.

The people from the Shia community gathered at DHQ Hospital where his body was taken for an autopsy.

They held a rally from the hospital which terminated at the residence of the deceased at Tower Chowk.

The protesters demanded that culprits involved in the killing should be arrested immediately.

Police have registered a case against unidentified assailants and are investigating. Later, he was laid to rest in a local graveyard in the presence of hundreds of mourners.

SP (City) Tahir Maqsood Cheena on Friday got arrested a sub-inspector and a moharrar of the Ladheywala Warraich police post after registration of a case against them for releasing two robbers.

Reports said the area people caught robbers Usman and Afzal and handed them over to police.

Sub-Inspector Ashfaq Butt and moharrar Muhammad Yousaf allegedly released them after striking a deal, but propagated they escaped from the jail. The SP said an inquiry was being conducted against them and, if found guilty of charges, they would be terminated.
