Sarfraz Ahmed appointed new Pakistan T20 captain

ISLAMABAD: Wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed has replaced Shahid Afridi as captain of Pakistan's Twenty20 team.
Afridi quit as captain after Pakistan lost three of its four group matches at the World Twenty20 tournament in India, but said he wanted to continue playing the shortest format of international cricket.
“I spoke to Sarfraz this morning and conveyed to him that he was our natural choice for this position,” PCB chairman Shaharyar Khan said in a statement Tuesday.
“His appointment is open-ended. I wish him good luck in his new role.”
Ahmed, 28, played in all the four World Twenty20 matches, but batted lower down the order throughout the tournament despite having a good strike rate of 120.24 in 21 Twenty20 internationals.
Ahmed led Quetta Gladiators in Pakistan's first professional domestic Twenty20 league in February before losing to the Misbah-ul-Haq-led Islamabad United in the final.
Pakistan is likely to play only three T20 internationals in the remainder of 2016, one against England and two against the world champion West Indies. Former Test captain Rashid Latif doesn't think that's enough to properly assess Ahmed's ability as captain.
“The decision to appoint Ahmed is no more than damage control of PCB,” Latif told The Associated Press.
“The cricket board is trying to put behind what happened at the World Twenty20 where we could win only one group match against Bangladesh.”
Latif said the PCB should also replace ODI captain Azhar Ali and “bring in Sarfraz” so that the wicketkeeper-batsman could get more experience as a skipper in the international arena.
“Making him captain for only Twenty20 is not enough,” Latif said.

Learnt a lot from Afridi, Misbah and Younis
After being appointed as the captain of the Pakistan T20 side, Sarfraz Ahmed thanked the skippers he played under since his international career kicked off in 2007.
The wicket-keeper played during the captaincy tenures of Shoaib Malik, Younis Khan, Shahid Afridi and Misbah-ul-Haq.
“I have learnt a lot from both Afridi and Misbah,” said Sarfraz while addressing reporters in Karachi on Tuesday.
“Younis used to field in the slips right beside me and has always helped me,” he added.
Accepting the challenges he is set to face amid the controversy surrounding Pakistan’s cricket setup, Sarfraz remained hopeful that the PCB will assist him.
“I’ll try to give my input to the board as Pakistan’s captain while at the same time i’ll also respect the policies of the board,” he said.
“I’ll try to apply what I learnt in my 10-year long career,” added the 28-year-old.

Agree with Latif, Sarfraz should be captain of ODI side - he is way better than Azhar Ali as far as attitude for captaincy is concerned. Sarfraz was also the captain of the U-19 Pak team that won the World Cup against India.

Great decision but Safraz should be made one day skipper as well. This will give me more rapid experience and he will be able to understand the team members better too. Also I agree that controversial players like Afridi, Shoaib, Ahmed Shezard should be shown the door and fresh blood should be injected into the team. Best of Safraz and lead with courage.

I totally agree with Latif that he should be made ODI captain as well. If Azhar Ali has any loyalty to Pak should resign on his own accord because Sheryar Khan will never let that happen soon as he doesn't have any cricketing sense.

If PCB was sincere they would have made him skipper till next T20 world cup.
However now Ahmed Shahzad, Umar Akmal, Shoeb Malik, Hafeez, Wahab Riaz will make his life difficult like Yunus Khan as a captain was traumatised by this lobby.
Seriously this appointment will only work if the chairman of the PCB has gone as well!!!

If PCB and the entire management is serious in Sarfraz and Pakistan cricket to succeed, then remaining old and tested players will eat Sarfraz raw and will make sure he does not flourish.
This has happened to Sarfraz before.
New young players needed with Sarfraz, even if it takes few years to build a good unit.

Decision could be good but in squad there are number of senior players...even had lead as captain...need to revisit squad as well because in presence of these guys...this is hard to expect any unusual performance from team as well new captain...
I am note either in our PCB have any additional or special coaching protocols for Captains' training because administrative, planning and technical competency is more important than physical fitness only!
As I understand with change of captain, need to replace at lease 4 to 5 players from current squad!
How interesting about Afridi, usually this is noticed all around world senior players leave gradually from short format to long...but in this case 180 degree...first he quit from Test, than One day but want to continue T20! Surprise....

Classic case of PCB leadership acting in quick time to divert attention from themselves and go on damage limitation. Get rid of the selection committee after the captain and the coach making deciding to give up themselves.
Much more needs to be done than just the cosmetic changes on captain, selection committee and coach. Until the PCB acknowledges their own failings nothing will improve.

It's a very good decision that Sarafraz is appointed as new captain of Pakistani cricket team. But the problem is that shoiab Malik, shahzad and Akmal won't let him work properly. Shehryar Khan should make him the captain of both the short formats, as Azhar is struggling in ODIs.
SK is characterised by his slow decision making. He should have seen the writings on the wall and sacked Afridi before the Asia Cup. I am sure results would have been much better.

Include some fifty % new young players and hire a coach from South Africa to train them with modern traditions I believe Pakistan can attain its natural position back with in a short period of time.

I do not understand why the PCB chairman decides the captain. Logically, PCB should appoint the selectors - all of whom should have cricketing background - and they should select Captain & Coach. The team should then be selected in consultation with Captain & Coach. Having said that, I think Sarfraz is a good choice. Pakistan need to think about its core team for the next WC & start working on the strategy. This is the time to send all the old seniors - Afridi, Hafeez, Malik - on vacation & build a new team around players in the 25 year bracket.

PCB should have waited till the time of any T20 game and assessed the behavior of players before making decision. The situation is hot and many of the seniors would sure not agree with this decision. Now, PCB should not select any of the senior, as they sure will bring trouble to the young man.

Job half done. Sarfarz should b appointed for the other formats of one day matches too. I am sure that Pakistan cricket team is plagued with politics. They don't like to play like a team. They like to play individually. We should sacrifice another four players to make it a team. The entire PCB needs a complete overhaul. If being a patron in chief the PM is helpless to clean this mess, then I am afraid we need a clean up operation for the cricket team too

Here we go again. No one has explained the criteria for captaincy. What is expected of him? Who decides that? Sarfraz as nice a guy as he is has not even established his position in the team. Honestly Shaharyar Khan should step aside and let some experience people, like Wasim Akram, Rameez Raja and Imran Khan decide. And once they had decided Sarfraz should be sent on 6 months intensive course to learn the theoretical aspects of the job. This trail and error must stop.

wicket keepers Waseem Bari,Moeen Khan and for Captaincy with greats like
Mushtaq Mohammad younger brother of Hanif Sahib, Imran Khan,Inzi and last but not the least Misbah and PCB should guarantee him safety from Afridi, Hafeez, and Akmal

A captain has to have a good cricketing mind, which Sarfaraz has. But he also has to be able to command respect, and inspire, motivate and rally the team behind him. Clearly this would be Sarfaraz's biggest challenge, especially with players like Umer Akmal, Shoaib Malik, Ahmed Shehzad and Wahab Riaz.

Appointing Sarfraz as Captain was always a no brainer. If Shaharyar Khan had any cricketing experience he would have known that already and as Latif said, he should also be the captain for the ODI format as Azhar is not suited for the format nor is he leader material. Having said that, we need to change the selectors and Shaharyar Khan himself should resign and let Mohsin Khan and Rashid Latif take over who know what they are doing and know the game and politics well.

I am sorry, I don't agree. This is a popularistic approach and the Chairman has given in because they want to avoid any further controversy.
When all the issues are going on, appointing a captain so early seems to be a rushed decision. It shows that clearly, Waqars report has not been looked into sincerely.
We saw sarfaraz's captaincy in PSL and he looked passionate but made lots of mistakes. His own batting and performance in this WT20 was below par.
I think Ahmed Shehzad could have been a good candidate - he is such a talented guy and often misunderstood. Shehzad had issues with egoistic people and that he could not suck up, which is why he got sidelined. Above said, why shouldn't normal vetting procedures apply for Captains role ? Let them apply to PCB, let them come up with their plan on how they intend to improve the team performance etc. Such a big role shouldn't just be gifted to someone, people must earn it based on actual leadership skills than statistical nonsense.

@Oz Good points about leadership qualities however I am having hard time understanding why someone would even consider Ahmed Shehzad as captain, Shehzad shows promise but he is another Umer Akmal who has not matured. Sarfaraz is not the sexiest choice but guys has more resilience, cricketing brain and fight back qualities then anyone in the team right now. Maybe you should watch Shehzad after power play overs - he struggles even to take singles. Hitting fours and sixes is Afrdi style and we all know how it ended after 20 years. Do we want more of that?

Sarfraz, start finding your own team. You cannot let old players stick around. They won't respect you. You will even be better by bringing back Mohammad Yousaf, Saeed Anwar, Mohammad Asif and Younis Khan instead of having Afridi, Umar Akmal, Ahmed Shahzad and Wahab Riaz. Become the selector, because the selectors don't face the music, it's the captain and Coach. Humbly ask Vivian Richards to coach our side. As a policy, we should only hire West Indies coaches. They are simply awesome!

Atleast some correct step, but PCS must also give him one day captaincy as Azkhar dont deserve place in one day team. 100 % correct Latif said the PCB should also replace ODI captain Azhar Ali and “bring in Sarfraz” so that the wicketkeeper-batsman could get more experience as a skipper in the international arena. "Making him captain for only T20 is not enough. Azhar is also not fit for ODI. Sarfarz should be ODI & T20 till next world cups Mr Sharyar you are Pathan give captaincy and assurance till world cup ODI & T20. Rashid latif is right.

While in PSL Kevin Piterson praised him and recommend him for the captaincy as he was inspired by his smartness.
Please get rid of Malik and afridi and Akmal brothers as they will not let him to be a successful captain and i have doubts about hafeez also.

@Oz Why are u such a huge supporter of Shahzad??Seriously tell me one solid reason that he should be in the team?Dont start the usual tune of he is talented and all that stuff.Don't you know his strike rate in ODI is 72 which is the worst in the world among all openers.He struggles to rotate strike and then plays a poor stroke and gets out.Azhar ali and Shahzad with their strike rates in 70s makes up for the worst opening pair in the world for ODIs.Both should be dropped ASAP.Instead of supporting Shahzad u should be backing someone like Sami Aslam who was harshly treated by PCB when he got dropped after one ODI so that they can bring this useless Shahzad back.

As per the survey 91% are in favor of making Sarfaraz the captain of ODI also. Afridi should be selected for future t-20 matches and for ODI they should consider Asad Shafiq, Fawad Alam, Younus Khan and Misbah.

As a captain he showed his worth in PSL and 2006 under 19 odi Worldcup. If all team members line up behind him and play as a unit then Pak cricket is back on the right track...

If Sarfaraz has any hope of succeeding in this role he will want to do a thorough spring cleaning of the team and get rid of all the dead wood. Any one who has any cricketing sense will tell him that players like Shehzad, Akmal and Malik are more a liability than an asset to the team. The lauded talents of these players will remain unfulfilled.

First of all, I think most of us who are commenting here don't have the first hand experience of playing cricket, we are just spectators or fans. So we are just expressing our opinions, not giving expert decision. Anyone could be chosen as a captain, however, he will expect support from all the team members, playing as one unit and he should be innovative in his approach, rather than playing according to script.

What we need is someone who can put together a customize strategy before each and every game like Dhoni to be successful. To be a captain, you must have a vision and be a planner to prepare for these games every day.

@Sandeep Kumar : Sandeep, I don't believe good batsman are defined by strike rates. Otherwise, Afridi will top the charts.
Shahzad played fine before waqar came. There have been battles of ego going on for a little while and he has also seen many opening partners change. To rotate strike and play a good partnership, you need good chemistry between players. He has not had that. There is so much criticism of everyone in Pakistan that I am afraid we are losing all the librelism, tolerance and acceptance. He still averages as one of our best openers, I dont care about the world.
I made him an example, but speaking broadly, meant that the captaincy decision was very rushed and timed to divert attention of public from the very mess PCB is in, for leaking waqars confidential report and various other things.

I will take Sarfaraz who has been consistent, I would have preferred Mohammed Hafiz for ODI and T20I but I do see the wisdom of building for the future. Sarfaraz will need his players support I hope he can bring them together like Misbah did in Tests. Sarfaraz needs to understand the subtle challenges of being a people manager. In my mind after Imran Khan, Misbah has been the best people manager Pakistan cricket has produced. Sarfaraz it will be in your best interest to learn from Misbah. The thinking of the board have to change.
I would make every player on the PCB pay role
work 8 hours a day when they are not playing matches.

There is no doubt that he is a live wire on the field and his leadership abilities are evident he should be made captain in all three formats, with time he will prove to be a better captain than Azhar Ali and Misbah. But more importantly an honest professional with proven capabilities must be appointed as Chairman and all excess baggage including Najam Sehiti must be removed, all type of politics in the team must be crushed, selection must be made on merits rather than other considerations. Talented youth must be encouraged, supported, should be given necessary education and grooming.

I don't think dressing room will support him. He was sideline during the world cup due to the team internal politics. He has a very good leadership skills but playing with Hafeez, Shezad ,Akmal and Afridi attitude will not be easy . Pakistan team need to change the attitude and team players need to support the captain and not selfish and Jailous.

I agree with many comments that he should have declined as there is no chance of success until there is a clean up of dirty politics inside dressing room and PCB management.

Not a wise decision at all to me. I think Azhar/Malik/Hafeez would have been a better option. I think Sarfaraz is not so proactive and lack of leading capacity as his body language suggests so. However it is the least worst choice as far as the Pakistan Cricket condition prevailing at recent time.

Sarfaraz is a good test wicket keeper but not so good in T20, so making some one a captain who is bound to fail would mean captaincy will go to some one else, just the way they Azhar captain who is failing miserably one more series loss and he is out of team, my only fear they will make Umar or Shahzad the next captain.....

I am not expecting change in fortunes, as the players and PCB management are all the same. We have a very challenging tour of England coming up were batsmen will be shown up very badly. So in a nutshell I am very pessimistic as I do t see any World class batsmen around the corner. So supporters will have to except and bite the bullet. Difficult times ahead.

First I appreciate Waqar Younis for his unbiased report and the steps taken to improve the Pakistan Cricket. He appointed Sarfaraz as Vice Captain to give him exposure of captaincy and many times said that he is a future captain. Sarfaraz still lacks exposure but best choice for captaincy in current circumstances. He needs to be given more powers in selection of the team as he will be held responsible in any case. I strongly think that Sarfaraz must come up with fresh ideas of exploring world cricket by strong mentoring of different cricketing legends. He should listen all but pick the best among all the advises, no need to blindly follow anyone as no one is perfect. To get rid of player politics he need to work with senior guys in humble but tactical way and gradually try to make his own team by exploring talent in local circuit and start replacing the culprits one by one. I wish best of luck to him.

Sarfraz be captain in T20, ODI and Test cricket in Pakistan. He plays all formats and actively watching every ball and every player in every game. Should have made him the captain before the two tournaments. But Shehryar had made the promise to Afridi of losing both tournaments which he was adamant to keeping.
Anyway, also should drop Shehzad, Akmal, Afridi, Malik, Hafeez and bring in Babar, Haris, Fawad, Yasir, Junaid and Sohail Khan.
