Gen Raheel 'seriously concerned' over violation of sovereignty by US

RAWALPINDI: Chief of Army Staff (COAS) General Raheel Sharif in a meeting with United States (US) Ambassador to Pakistan David Hale on Wednesday expressed serious concerns over the US drone strike in Balochistan in which Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour was reportedly killed.
The Army chief said the drone attack, which was a violation of sovereignty, was detrimental to Pak-US ties and regional stability and damaged peace efforts, an Inter-Services Public Relations statement said.
The COAS said Pakistan’s efforts, successes and sacrifices in the fight against terrorism are unparalleled.
The US drone strike was the first-ever in Balochistan, which has long been a ‘red line’ for Pakistan.
While the government has long condemned drone strikes, terming them a violation of Pakistan’s sovereignty, it had already conveyed a set of ‘red lines’ to the US in 2010, specifically mentioning attacks in Balochistan as a no-go area.
Hale called on the Army chief at General Headquarters. The situation arising after the US drone strike in Balochistan came under discussion during the meeting.
Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif criticised the US drone strike on Sunday, describing it as a violation of Pakistan's sovereignty. A strong protest has also been lodged with the US over the attack.
Mansour was reported killed in Pakistan on Saturday when his vehicle was struck by a US drone in Balochistan, believed to be the first time a Taliban leader was killed in such a way inside Pakistani territory.
The US and Afghan governments said Mansour had been an obstacle to a peace process that had ground to a halt when he refused to participate in peace talks earlier this year. Instead, he intensified the war in Afghanistan, now in its 15th year.
On Tuesday, Interior Minister Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan said that the government cannot confirm yet that the person killed in the incident in Balochistan was Afghan Taliban chief Mullah Mansour.
Rejecting the argument that Mullah Akhtar Mansour was the major hurdle in talks between the Afghan Taliban and Kabul, he said said that the Murree dialogue could not have taken place if he had acted as a spoiler.

The United States remains immune to all violations committed across the globe. Be it Pakistan or some other country, the United States cares a little. It has a simple policy. Create unrest, topple governments, supply arms, and secure its interests. Unfortunately, neither Pakistan nor India understands it and both keep on accusing each other.

Not sure but how come COAS calls Ambassador of another country to discuss foreign policy issue ?
Its clear that Pakistan has dual power center and unfortunately both the centers are taken care off by US.

@Arslan Kindly open your eyes. PAF is 3rd/4th generation airforce. Since the inception of our country we have not been able to make a single Jet engine. We cannot make any 4th generation avionics, radars etc. America is 5 plus generation. Any aggression by PAF will result in the total wipe-out of all our fighter planes. One B2-Spirit is enough to destroy the whole Sargodha Airbase and our radars will not even detect it. If America will assign one Squadron of F22 raptors to destroy our jets then within 24 hours our all fighter planes can be grounded or destroyed.

Raheel who likes to make comments every now and then to remain in the news and also make government look bad was conspicuously silent for 2 days. Such attacks by USA damage his reputation directly but his response of disappearing and falling silent is even worse. This will undermine his effort to take over the power in Pakistan.

US cannot be blamed entirely as Pakistan gives indirect approval to most drone attacks taking place in the country. Who knows if this attack too was carried out at Pakistan's consent as Mansour was showing defiance to talks process and getting too close to Iran.

I will not be concerned, but act whats required. Turkey gave you an example few months ago when Russian aircraft violated their airspace.
So stop issuing statements, either say what you mean by concern and then if US or any country doesnt listen, convey in the language they understand. We all know drones are not stealth and can easily be shot down, but i guess a stern warning can work as well.

Fail to understand the point. On the day when American Senate passes the bill to give $700 million worth of arms to army he has the moral authority to even question any of American actions be they in Afghanistan or Pakistan. @Fahad This is funny!!!. But, on a serious note this attack is not a failure of the army to defend it's country rather it's the failure of the establishment to defend it's policies. In international diplomacy these attack can only take place in principal. I'm sure that govt must have its reasons to bend the 'policy' but the only way to justify is if we see the same 'flexibility' on the other side.

@sunil: Some sensitive matters needs several considerations, shooting an intruding aircraft or drone is a child's play for PAF. No other country will go unpunished and that too within minutes if any dare commit such mistake equivalent to even a fraction of a drone attack. When you talk of Pakistan Armed Forces you are talking about a very brave & competent force ready to grab within minutes.

What I don't understand is sometimes you here the COAS say that Pakistan can deal with all threats. Yet an armed drone is able to penetrate Pakistani territory without them even knowing?... So either they do know and are complicit in this action or they can't defend their airspace in which case COAS is not being realistic when he makes such statements.

There are no double standards here because Taliban have no government and their violations shall be considered as criminal acts of a band or group unlicensed by any government whereas actions of United States are to be viewed in a totally different light as they come from a 100 percent sovereign and legitimate government. Well it was the response after a few days when the army handed over angoor adda to afghanistan unconditionally ! I hope he has ordered an inquiry as to why drones werent intercepted. By the way, it was not the first drone strike so why complain now . Also the person who got killed was supposed to be pakistan enemy and was roaming our area freely, who would comment on that !

History shows US always used Pakistan for its interests. This violation clearly shows that US have crossed all limits. Now Pakistan should penetrate inside Afghanistan to kill those who kill Pakistanis with bomb blasts.

We as Pakistanis seem to be demoralized and disappointed nation who do not care of their boundaries. Anyone is welcome the only condition to have money to pay at the border. How and why Afghanis are allowed to cross border without documentations. Border at Wahga, Punjab and Khokarapar, Sindh should be opened like that so people can move freely.

The Americans are killing Taliban not for peace talks but to empower their proxies, the Afghan ISIS who have been beaten badly by the talibs.
Also any Pakistani influence is not in their interests or interests of India and Iran.
Pakistan must counter these steps to encircle it by hostile countries...

First -this is nothing but a drama and I want to clear one thing that no country can take on US i.e. US sails its ships in South China sea and all China can do is warn them again and again. US sails it ships near Russia-Ukraine border and all Russia can do is warn them again and again. Therefore, all Pak can do is the same.
Second - why are people griping about it. US did Pak a favor by getting rid of a dangerous man who will not give a dime to send his suicide bombers to blow Pak citizens. All the progressive people in Pak should be happy and not sad/mad.

All leaders concern for sovereignty of Pakistan is good. But it requires appropriate response, just lip service not enough. First attention should be towards very serious security and intelligence failure by security agencies in two cases, Osama and now Mansour violated sovereignty of Pakistan, action required urgently against persons assisting these individuals who brought bad name to Pakistan by outsiders getting impression that state is protecting these criminals. It should be demonstrated to the world that Pakistan does not harbour terrorists by publicly punishing persons who assisted the criminals. Also US should be warned that no more drone activity in Pakistan, any drone in future shall be shot down, PAF is capable to do that. Action against Qutta shura who harbour terrorists should be banned and eliminated. It is high time to take this matter seriously and all serious actions taken to protect Pakistan's sovereignty and dignity.

It was an the Great Genral Musharraf who gave people true power under local bodies. Karachi became city of lights when true representatives MQM was given power for the first time at the local level. Our nation was the 11th growing nation in the world. Now General Raheel Shareef is the most loved person in the country. If anyone has any doubt. @Gp65, I'll answer it for you, Its the military's job to protect the borders and they do a great job of it. It was a drone strike, fired from across the border, its the civil governments responsibility to lodge complaints not military's. But after allowing the civilians to do it, it becomes the military leaders responsibility to voice their concerns so everyone is on the same page. I strongly suggest reading up on it, getting yourself educated on chain of command when it comes to violations of a countries sovereignty, its easy for you to sit at home and be a critic, do you have any idea how many soldiers and officers have given their lives to protect us so you can sit at home with your loved ones ? May want to go and ask the wives and children how they are doing who lost their husbands and fathers protecting unappreciative folks like you.

Some of you really need to read the article again, read the report before asking foolish questions.Here is a hint, the reason the drones are used are simply because they can get them in range without crossing borders and do their job. Like in this particular case, the drone never crossed the border, but the US did violate by firing a missile into Pakistan's territory

I have a feeling that in the back, these attacks are coordinated with Pakistan. Both countries put on a show to misdirect general public so there is no backlash. If Gen Raheel is so concerned, why can't they just shoot down the drone? Are they not capable enough? What guarantees can he provide to the US that if they relay the information to Pakistani Army, appropriate action will be taken?

Drone attacks are definitely a violation of sovereignty. Imagine Mexico sending drones over the United States (or even Canada for that matter).
However, the appropriate response from the COAS would be to deny the Taliban and other violent groups sanctuary. Pound them with all the militaries’ might. Do not allow them to operate or recruit inside the country. Pakistan has great potential as a nation, but will never be able to claim its rightful place a leader in Asia until it rids itself of organization hell bent on destabilizing the country.

Mansour was reported killed in Pakistan on Saturday when his vehicle was struck by a US drone in Balochistan. (Because two people in car were killed where the driver was identified from a charred car but 2nd passenger was identified from Pakistani passport and ID card that did not get charred from the drone attack!)
Then there another report that says, Mullah Haibatullah Akhundzada has been chosen as the new head of the Afghan Taliban.(Why would they choose Haibatullah Akhundzada as a new leader if Mansour is not killed).
Makes you wonder what the truth is here....

It's times like this that a true leader is tested . Gen Raheel has built a great public image of an honest,sincere,brave leader and I have no doubt about his intent. However Gen Musharraf and several ex Generals were tested under far worse conditions either after a loss of war with the neighbor or after the so called war on terror .This time will test the actions that follow these statements.
What's at stake is can Pakistan have an iota of influence over USA,Afganistan or even elements within Pakistan. The army is not meant for fighting Chotu gang its job is to protect the borders. The Pakistani border has been violated by terrorists,smugglers, India,Afghanistan,Iran ,China and USA. All this after the so called possession of the bomb. The military enjoys immense popularity in the country not because of their valor or battlefield achievements but because the country lacks inspiring leaders with vision. RS you have the golden moment to rise for the nation now.
