KARACHI: The State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) will issue a special coin in honour of celebrated humanitarian Abdul Sattar Edhi who passed away last week.
The denomination, shape and other details regarding the coin will be announced on Saturday at a special condolence reference for Edhi, SBP Spokesman Abid Qamar told DawnNews.
Revered by many as a national hero, Abdul Sattar Edhi created a charitable empire out of nothing. He masterminded Pakistan’s largest welfare organisation almost single-handedly, entirely with private donations.
He was diagnosed with kidney failure in 2013 but had been unable to get a transplant due to frail health and was receiving treatment at the Sindh Institute of Urology and Transplantation.
While undergoing a scheduled dialysis on Friday, Edhi felt difficulty breathing after which doctors decided to shift him onto a ventilator.
The humanitarian passed away at the age of 88 in Karachi on Friday night.
Thousands of people, including high-profile politicians and government officials, gathered at the National Stadium to attend Edhi's funeral prayers on Saturday.
The iconic social worker was given a guard of honour and a 19-gun salute by the Pakistan Army as his body was taken away from the National Stadium after a state funeral. His body was then taken to Edhi village, where he was laid to rest.

Please name / rename Islamabad International Airport to Abdul Sattar Edhi International Airport - This way this great-man's name will be in every country in the world. Like Emirate, Etihad and Qatar Airways who include brochures about their own funds and charities - PIA should carry information about EDHI foundation in the seat pocket.

Good step by Government . I suggest please name one of the international airport also in Mr EDHI name. Perhaps Multan or Faisalabad or Sialkot. Maulana EDHI not just made our nation proud but we can boast high in world that we too have a MAHATMA who made his life a living example of today's harsh corrupt and selfish world!

Excellent manner to pay tributes to Br Edhi. Incidentally Dawn has already published my suggestions that (a) Postage Stamps be issued (b) album be compiled containing all what has published in Pakistan and overseas on him after his death including editorials, news, articles, blogs, comments and letters (c) be included in Sociology and Social Work subjects taught at graduation and post graduation level. Then I agree that one airport be named as Edhi International Airport. Undoubtedly he and he only deserve to be recognized and patronized alike. Iqbal Hadi Zaidi

It is good decision of the government. One expects one more decision from the government of declaring July 9, the day of Mr. Edhi death as Edhi Day, with no national holiday should also come. At least the nation will remember Mr. Edhi every year by this way and anyone who wants to announce charity should announce it on Edhi Day I think it will enlarge the circle of those who want to do charity.

Look at it this way. If a Nobel Prize was accorded to Edhi the only thing that would have happened is that the stature of Nobel Prize would have gone up. It would not have made a dent in Edhi's life or his work.
Very rarely you'll find individuals who are above all these trivial things. respected Edhi was one of those.

A brilliant gesture by state bank to commemorate late Haji Sattar Edhi, State bank should follow up issuing silver and gold coins as investment for the public and percentage of proceeds given to Edhi Trust.
