Spirit of Math (SoM), one of Canada’s largest after-school math enrichment programme with over 8500 students and 40 campuses spread across Canada and United States, is now opening two new locations in Pakistan.

The programme focuses on problem solving and cooperative teamwork, and offers after-school math classes, camps, training for educators, and an expanding series of math workbooks.

Since 1992, SoM students have been consistently placed on national and international mathematics honour rolls and alumni have obtained scholarships from some of North America’s top universities.

The school had previously opened two branches in Lahore in August 2017, and is now in the process of expanding their reach.

Bushra Ansari, an advocate for the school's mission, announced a bursary for ten high-achieving students of grades 1-5 from underprivileged backgrounds during a press conference organised by the school.

“We have an outdated education system with an outdated syllabus and method of teaching. So this is something new and incredible. I am thankful to my Canadian friends for introducing Spirit of Math to Pakistan. For the sake of our children, we need to keep making advances in our education system and apply new methodologies in teaching. We need to innovate a healthy, enjoyable and nurturing learning environment, not just in Math but in all other subjects as well,” says Ansari.

She also added that her own granddaughter attends Spirit of Math.

Mrs. Kim Langen, CEO and co-founder of Spirit of Math, also led a panel discussion at the event with educators to discuss crucial skills needed to improve education standards in Pakistan, and how they can instill these skills into their students and learn newer methodologies that teachers and parents require to improve every child's performance at school.

Ms. Kirsti Langen, Academic Director for SoM Pakistan, briefed attendees of the event on the work SoM has been doing in Pakistan so far.

Nathan Langen, Vice President Campus Operations for SoM Pakistan, also introduced their upcoming initiative World Mathematical Olympiad (WMO) Pakistan, which will select and train high-achieving students nationwide to participate as Team Pakistan at the WMO. Team Canada, trained by SoM previously, went on to win gold, silver and bronze awards at the WMO in Beijing, China in August 2017.

The Olympiad will be held at Stanford University in California this year.
