HARIPUR: A man and his teenage son drowned in the Khanpur Dam’s canal here on Wednesday, police and witnesses said.

The police quoted witnesses as saying that Ariyan Qureshi, 13, slipped into water while washing his hands on the banks of the canal. They said Nadeem Qureshi, 45, jumped into the water to save his son, but he also drowned.

The police said Nadeem from Rawalpindi was on a picnic to Khanpur Dam with his son and a nephew. Local divers fished out the bodies and shifted them to the tehsil headquarters hospital, Khanpur.

Meanwhile, four persons, including a married woman, committed suicide during last three days in different parts of Haripur, police said.

Also in the day, a Pak Army soldier was laid to rest in his ancestral graveyard on Wednesday.

Hawaldar Nasir Mehmood was martyred when an avalanche buried him alive in Chamb area of AJK on January 10, 2020. His body was recovered yesterday and shifted to his native Khoe Mair village in Khanpur tehsil on Wednesday.

He was buried with full military honour.
