Most traditions have founding pillars that give them the credibility and support that is needed for it to be hailed as a tradition in the first place. Horror is one such tradition and the following slideshow is of some of the movies that have passed the test of time and to this day successfully rattle their viewers fragile sanity. All images are official movie posters.

Both Dawns of the Dead are classics in their own right even though the latter is meant to be a remake, it is original enough to be hailed as a new creation.
The original graces our visual senses of a friend in ones midst that's transforming before you into the very creature that you've fought so hard to keep out. The later version leaves no room for hope and happy endings so forming attachments is not advised.

'PUT THE LOTION IN THE BASKET!'
Released in 1991 and based on the Thomas Harris book of the same name. The story is of an FBI agent using the genius of an incarcerated serial killer to find another serial killer. A rare breed of intelligent horror, this film has inspired the likes of Dexter and numerous other pop-cultural offshoots.

Based on a novel by William Peter Blatty, the Exorcist claims to be based on real events. Regardless, the transformation that takes the viewer from witnessing a happy family going about their lives to being ravaged by a very powerful demonic presence is unnerving. Linda Blair, the girl who plays the role of the possessed is quite possibly one of the greatest child actors to have graced the silver screen.

Psycho gives new meaning to the term 'mama's boy'. This suspense-filled Hitchcock classic will throw light onto attachment issues, sexual repression, schizophrenia and most importantly, homicidal tendencies. The film has paved the way for hoards of B-Movies and parodies and re-makes. In fact due to its success several unsuccessful sequels were made but never took off.

What do you do when you are stranded in an absolutely gargantuan hotel, snowed in with just your parents? Read a book? Watch some TV? Not slowly witness your fathers descent into madness and constantly look over your shoulder for corpses roaming the aisles, right? RIGHT?!

Based on the true story of the Lutz's in the 1970's The Amityville Horror is one of the original haunted house tales. A couple moves into the house where previously a disturbed young man had massacred his entire family. Now the house seems to have memories that it wants to resurface that range from taking away an old priests sight and a young family's grip on reality.

For those who haven't seen this, suggestions range from never watching this movie to watching it by yourself with the lights turned off and preferably no one at home to hear your screams. Like many films, this too borrows heavily from the chronicles of the very unstable Ed Gein and as a bonus has lampshades made out of human skin and ancient cannibals invited to dinner.

Possibly the WORST case scenario you could ever be in when caring for minors. When a Stranger Calls is a time old classic about a babysitter being harassed by an anonymous caller who insists that she 'check the children'. After being successful in his murderous rampage, the killer breaks loose from a mental institution to see if lightening will strike twice.
