STORY TIME: When wishes come true...

By Zeenat Sahar

One day as Komal was coming back from school she heard a whimpering noise behind a bush. Curiously she marched towards it and found a fairy crying. She asked kindly, “Oh, why are you so sad?’

To this the fairy answered miserably, “M-my wings are b-b-roooken!” She was in such an unhappy state that Komal wanted to help her. She took out a stapler from her bag and was just about to staple her wings when the fairy squealed, “Noooo, it will hurt me!” So she offered her scotch tape. The fairy agreed and Komal taped her wings. The fairy was so delighted and grateful that she granted Komal a wish. As Komal visualized the picture of a ventriloquist performing in a circus she decided to master ventriloquism. This is the ability to speak without moving your lips so that what you say seems to come from something else.

“ At 6 o’clock next morning you will be the best ventriloquist in the world,”the fairy said and with these words she flew away in the clouds.

The next morning Komal checked whether that prediction was true, then discovered how wonderfully she could throw her voice over that picture. She tried some more stunts and then she headed for school.

That day was exciting and she made the best use of her gift. In the assembly when the principal was announcing something, naughty Komal threw her voice at her and made it seem as if the principal was burping. Everyone in the hall started laughing. The poor principal was so confused that the teachers thought she was ill and so they dragged her to the school clinic. The boring assembly was dismissed and everyone went to their classes giggling away.

Now came the dreary everlasting computer period. Let’s have some fun, Komal thought. She waited for Miss Asmita to get busy in something and then she did her pranks. She threw the words, ‘How dare you use me! Now you pay for it.’ over the main computer. All the students screamed and ran away thinking that there was a ghost. Komal laughed until tears streamed down her plump cheeks.

Next was the tedious and exhausting biology period. Now how to draw off this period, Komal racked her brains. Her eyes fell on a clock and a mischievous idea came. She chanted, projecting her voice over the clock, ‘Tick tick tock, merrily sings the clock, today is the day of shocks….’ Miss Farheen almost fainted from the shock but managed to shout a piercing shriek. Some students were laughing and others were screaming. The whole situation was topsy-turvy. A lot of racket was going on and so the Principal came to inquire. Seeing her, Komal wanted to have another trick so she threw her voice over the skeleton saying, ‘Ah one more victim to eat.’ The structure of the clock seemed as if it was grinning with pleasure and that it might jump forward any moment. Everyone screamed even more and ran towards the hall.

The Principal announced, “This school is bewitched. Everyone quickly go to your house before you are victimized by a mad ghost here. The school will reopen in a month. Go now!”

With this she took her purse and ran away. Seeing her, the staff and students scampered out too. What victory Komal rejoiced. Extra holidays!
