It was bad and very frustrating. We received not one, not two, but five poems all written by different people but, word for word, exactly the same? Only one of them mentioned that it was not her original work but she liked it and wanted to share it with others. The rest didn’t say a word about the source; they just wanted us to print the poems as their own composition. And to top it all when we mailed them to say that they had been caught, they didn’t even have the courage to come forward and apologize.
Though copied stuff comes to other sections as well, Poets’ Corner is the worst hit. We encourage you to write but we want you to feel responsible and not to cheat us. If you have access to the net, that does not mean that you can copy anything you like and send it to some magazine as your own. If you want to see your name in print, you will have to work hard.
It is difficult for us to check the authenticity of each and every contribution that comes to us. But when something pirated gets printed, we feel bad about it. What do those who cheat or plagiarize get? Temporary fame. And what if we print their names in the paper and let the world know about their misdeeds? Wouldn’t they be embarrassed?
The reputation of the magazine and the paper is important for us. If you do not refrain from cheating and sending plagiarized stuff, we will have to think of other options. Please let us know whether you are going to behave responsibly or should we close down Poets’ Corner?
