SUKKUR, Dec 4: Jamiat Ulema-i-Islam (F) Senator Moulana Abdul Ghafoor Haideri has said that President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Syed Yousuf Raza Gilani should announce if they want any amendment to the blasphemy law. He criticised Punjab Governor Salman Taseer for trying to save Aasia Bibi, a Christian woman who has been awarded death sentence in a blasphemy case, from punishment and accused the governor of talking against Islam.

Addressing a press conference in Madressah Hammadia Manzilgah here on Saturday, Moulana Haideri criticised statement of the Punjab governor in which he had termed the blasphemy law a black law. He said that Mr Taseer was not eligible for the post of the governor after issuing the statement.

He said that if Aasia Bibi thought herself innocent, she should approach the court.

He said that waiver of punishment to Aasia from the president was not acceptable, adding that religious parties and the nation would resist against attempts to amend the blasphemy law.

He said that protests would be held throughout Sindh on Dec 9 and a rally would be staged from Therhi bypass to Sukkur.
