HYDERABAD, Dec 14: The Sindh Abadgar Tehreek has criticised proposed agriculture tax on growers and termed it a conspiracy by the government and the capitalist class.

The growers, it added, had already been paying indirect taxes and were not in a position to pay more such taxes.

A meeting of the organisation, held here on Tuesday under the chairmanship of Ghulam Mustafa Leghari, observed that any attempt to levy agriculture tax on growers would be treated as an attempt to their economic murder.

President of the Awami Tehreek, Ayaz Latif Palijo, also attended the meeting.

The meeting accused the government of deceiving the flood -affected growers by promising them free seed and fertiliser and pointed out that Sindh chief minister's announcement in this regard was yet to materialise.

It demanded of the government to give free seed and fertiliser to the flood-hit growers and also pay a reasonable compensation to them for their damaged crops.

It demanded a minimum price of Rs 300 for sugarcane per 40 kg, an end to the role of the middle man with a directive to mills to purchase sugarcane directly from the growers.

It observed that spurious seed, fertiliser and pesticides were being openly sold in the market with complete impunity. This had resulted in huge losses to growers, the meeting claimed and demanded strict action against officials for backing such dealers.
