A massive tsunami sweeps in to engulf a residential area after a powerful earthquake in Natori.—Reuters

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan on Friday said that its foreign ministry is in contact with the embassy in Tokyo, which has confirmed that all of its officials are safe .

The strongest earthquake ever to hit Japan Friday unleashed a terrifying 10-metre tsunami that claimed hundreds of lives.

The Pakistani community in the Tokyo area is also reportedly safe, Foreign Office Spokesperson Tehmina Janjua said in a statement.

She said the embassy is trying to get in touch with Pakistanis residing in the areas most affected by the earthquake and the tsunami in the North East of Japan.
