KARACHI: The Pakistan Cricket Board has removed Shahid Afridi as one-day team captain for the forthcoming series against Ireland.
Chairman of the board Ijaz Butt told a media conference in Islamabad that senior batsman Misbah-ul-Haq would lead the team in the two one-day matches against Ireland on May 28 and 30.
“Afridi has been retained as a player in the one-day squad but the captaincy has gone to Misbah,” Butt said without elaborating the reason for the decision.
PCB spokesman Nadeem Sarwar told The Associated Press that it is the “policy of the board to appoint a captain on a series to series basis.”
Afridi had captained the team to the World Cup semi-finals where they lost to India and recently also guided them to a 3-2 win over the West Indies in the ODI series in the Caribbean.
Afridi ruffled feathers in the PCB and team when he returned from the Caribbean early this month and told the media that he was not happy with people interfering in his work.
Although the all-rounder didn't name names, media reports said he had developed differences with head coach Waqar Younis over team selection issues.
The PCB issued a notice to Afridi to explain his conduct as he had violated the players' code of conduct with his statement on team affairs.
Butt made it clear Afridi had never been given any assurances regarding the captaincy. He pointed out that the present policy of the board was to appoint captain on a series-to-series basis.
Afridi had struggled with bat and ball in the one-day series in the West Indies but has been leading the national team in limited overs cricket since early 2010 while Misbah has been test captain since last year.
The national selectors have made no changes in the test squad playing in the West Indies at present but included Afridi and senior batsman Younis Khan in the side for the Ireland matches.
Younis had returned home before the first test in the West Indies due to the death of his elder brother.

afridi is the best captains for Pakistan cricket team abter Imran Khan. He is the one best all rounder in the world so he must be returnd to captaincy
I am shocked why misbah has been selected captain for ODI by the PCB, even misbah not fitted in the ODI formate.

this is really a big blow for Pakistan Cricket team. Afridi is such a talented man, recently though he has'nt show any good perfomance with the bat but in bowling is an agressive bowler.

Hi All,
Finally the because of Mishbah, we lost world cup Semi to India and first 20-20 world cup final. We have him as the captain of the team. The guy was unable no made a single century through out his carrier. We all must thank him for his extraordinary batting average. Pakistani cricket is a lost cause…especially when such incompetent person become captain after losing the first test against West Indies

I am not a big fan of afridi but I fail to understand the appointment of misbah as a captain . We just lost a test match to west indian team under his able leadership. But then why fret every one in Pakistan has their own interest to protect and ofcourse BUTT is no exception.

Team lost match to india absolutely a slow bating misbah and reckless bating by shaid. I raised my opnion after the game to reduce both of them. This was a match we easily gave to india and both are senior players and owe a exolanation to the nation

If it wasnt for misbah pakistan would have lost to india by a larger margin
if iit wasnt for him we would have lost t20 by larger margin
Afridi has not shown his performance in the last few games and was his fault he didnt take the powerplay earlier
some times we should look at the postives and stop criticising everyone

misbah is a good captain we admit it. But he is not fitted for ODI format. And afridi has ability to carry team together. Although no performance in batting but he is best in bowling. afridi is absolutely exploited. Now he must show his individual performance to butt sahib.

I think its a best decision. He was trying to be smart. He overrated himself.His performance dont motivate anyone. PCB has done right.Pak just defeated WI to reach semis. else the story could have been different.He is projecting as if he has done wonder to PAK cricket by reaching semis but the reality speaks otherwise.Loosing WI is WI is an example of it.

Another thunderbolt by unorganized PCB.Misbah is reaching retirement age and this is a huge step backwards but I do suspect this is a temporary move till Javed Miandad announces his return to International cricket as Martin Crowe did.
Pakistan cricket is doomed at the moment and needs to reform quickly..
Now the whole team will be divided in groups again!!

Afridi is no doubt a good enough player but he is not a team player. He plays for himself and wont change his game plan according to situation and doesnt have decision making power. Always plays in a defensive mode.He has no clue how to speak to the media. About time and ya losing to india was his fault. I used to like him alot as a player but now i cannt stand him anymore.I bet you he is not happy because over kamran akmal exclusion.

How can a player like misbah be a good captain when he could not equate balls remaining and runs required in semis of WC. He is bogus headless who knows politics, has got liason with PCB members, and is sluggish fellow. this is a big set back to Pak cricket. Afridi has managed to take team having no recognised batting to WC semis, the job misbah can never do

Ex-players Aamer Sohail, Abdul Qadir and Zaheer Abbas has been lobbying for Misbah to be made captain of the Pakistan team in all the formats. Misbah was one of the reason for losing the semis aginst India in WC and he also lost the 1st test aginst WI. It is also rumored that Waqar Yunus is behind this sacking.

In my opinion nothing can be done for Pakistan cricket as well as PCB untill these 5 to 10 people remain in PCB.If we recall there are really 5 to 10 people those hijaked the PCB, Like Miadad, Butt, MR. Ilayas, Mr. Intakab Alam etc.This is very bad decision by PCB, it like the personel decision of Butt sb. i do't what will happend with the Pakistan.

You need a captain who leads from front like Dhoni.
Dhoni could turn a defeat to victory against Sri Lanka in world cup final.
What did Misbah do? He turned Victory to defeat in World cup Semi.
Pakistan needs to build a new team and management, kickout Ijaz Butt and appoint Javed Miandad, someone who can turn defeat into Victory.

Would they ever be mature in development and management of cricket? I think sports ministry should fire PCB management and hire former players with real experience
Replacing Afridi is OK since Afridi did not demonstrated maturity you can expect from a captain in the last series he should be replaced but not by Misbah. misbah is worst. There is no player with "Captin material" in the team they should call Younis Khan he is most mature player PCB can have in the team.

I think Misbah is the right choice. He might be nearing his retirement age, but that is what the team needs a "granny". An old and mature figure who can keep tabs on vulnerable team-mates even if he dosent perform well. Most of the team players come from backgrounds where manner and etiquette are an alien concept. Thats why we need an MBA captain otherwise it will become law of the jungle where the fittest and the most devious ones like shoaib malik and kamran akmal will survive.

I have always said a cricketer should be able to play one day as well as test matches, otherwise leave and play "gilli danda.' Shahid Afridi asked for it and got it. Misbah has alwways scored in almost evry match except one or two and the only batsman with runs in the past 12-15 matches. Deserving should desire and others should retire.

It is shocking news for Pakistani cricket lovers. Misbah was the man behind losing semi in WC and just now lost first test against WI. He is not a ODI and 20x20 player by birth. This is a reward for him? PCB chairman needs to wake up as he seems to be sleeping and not following cricket and performance by individual players. Cricket is doomed under him!

I Love AFRIDI. AFRIDI is a good player and best captain. He plays for team and nation not for himself. Why pcb change the captain? When the team was in the strugle no one ready to take responsibily of captancy. It was AFRIDI who accept the captancy and move the team towards the sucess. It was AFRIDI who built combination among the whole team. It was AFRIDI who defeat the campion australia n WC wit un experience team. It was afridi who reached the team in WC semi final. I dn't know why pcb change him! Ijaz butt does't know any thing about cricket. He distroy pakistan cricket. Plzz i request to President of pakistan to replace ijazz butt.

Pakistan Cricket Board should arrange basic media discussion related courses for all it's players and officials as no Pakistan current player and or official exactly know, As how to talk to media when they had to?
They can't balance their body but tries to leave media presentation as soon as possible, and can't talk what they wants, even though when they are "Man of the match" and or "Man of the series".
They should have been told that there is no shame to speaks in urdu.
Pakistan Cricket Board have saked Shahid Afridi from captaincy for his statement against Waqar Younis then they should have saked Ijaz Butt ages ago?
Mature them mentally and save our future.
We are in a position to lose hundreds and hundreds of Ijaz Butt But We doesn't want to lose Shahid Khan Afridi, As in past we have lost great Inzamam-ul-Haq due to another chairmans of Pakistan Cricket Board. Legends are not born every day.
Respect them?
