MIRAMSHAH/PESHAWAR, June 18: A woman and a girl were killed and seven other persons sustained injuries when mortar shells hit a house and a hotel in North Waziristan Agency on Saturday.

Two security personnel were also injured when militants attacked a checkpost in the tribal region.

Officials said that militants attacked a checkpost in Miramshah bazaar with sophisticated weapons early in the morning, resulting in injuries to two security men.

Security forces also opened retaliatory firing on the attackers.

The exchange of fire continued for more than an hour. The attackers fled the area.

Later, security forces launched a search operation in the area.

A shell hit a house in Machees camp, killing a girl and woman of the same family and injuring three other persons.

Another second shell fell on Shawal Medical Centre, which caught fire while the third shell hit a local hotel. Four persons in the hotel sustained injuries. The injured were shifted to agency headquarters hospital in Miramshah. The injured soldiers were taken to CMH Bannu.

In Peshawar, police claimed that at least four militants, who attacked a checkpost in the limits of Sarband police station on Friday night, were killed.

An official said that a group of militants fired three rockets at Riaz Shaheed police post but they could not hit the target.

Militants also opened firing on police with automatic weapons but they successfully repulsed the attack.

He said the police and Frontier Constabulary countered the attack and killed at least four militants, but the attackers managed to take their bodies with them.

In the wake of security threats, Karnal Sher Khan Stadium remained closed for the second consecutive day on Saturday for visitors.
