LAHORE: Asma Jahangir, leading rights lawyer and a former president of the Supreme Court Bar Association, on Thursday said she would defend ousted ambassador Husain Haqqani in the ‘memo’ case.

“I was contacted with a request to take up the case a few days ago and I said yes today,” Ms Jahangir confirmed to Dawn by telephone on Thursday night.

Sources close to her said Ms Jahangir made her decision after consulting some of the leading lawyers and that her argument may focus on whether the ‘memogate’ petition was maintainable.
