Manufacturing bagpipes

Published April 25, 2012

Pakistan used to be the largest exporter of bagpipes after Scotland.  These days mostly sets of bagpipes are being exported to Scotland, Canada and America.

Manufacturers from Sialkot have been exporting bagpipes for well over a century, when a trader from Scotland came to explore whether the city was a possible outlet.

Imran Mumtaz, owner of the Greenland Pipe Company at the historic Raja Bazar, Sialkot is a third-generation bagpipe-maker, is worried about the future of this industry.

These days only a handful of manufacturers are in business.  A number of bagpipe manufacturers have closed the businesses due to energy crisis.
