LAHORE, May 16: The PML-Q on Wednesday submitted a resolution in the Punjab Assembly demanding district status for Murree.

PML-Q parliamentary leader Chaudhry Zaheeruddin submitted the rersolution.

He said though relatively smaller tehsils like Pakpattan, Chiniot, Nankana and Hafizabad were upgraded as districts, Murree was being denied the status. He said former chief minister Chaudhry Pervaiz Elahi had started a clean water project for the people of Murree at a cost of Rs3.5 billion but the PML-N government abandoned it.

He said through devolution of powers and creation of more administrative units, the people’s problems could be addressed.

Abolition of the district government system was also increasing sense of deprivation among the masses, he added.

Former Murree Tehsil nazim Sardar Saleem Khan has welcomed the move and said after upgrade of the hill station to district problems like shortage of potable water, sewerage, health facilities, education would be solved and tourism in the area would thrive.
