Traders` strike in Islamabad

Published May 17, 2009

THIS has reference to the letter, “Traders' strike in Islamabad” (May 14), by Dr M.I. Shaikh. I also felt like sharing the ordeal that I am facing with my tenant in Blue Area.

The gentleman was verbally told in 2006 and many times later, while renewing the agreement for the next three years, that at the expiry of this agreement in 2009 it would not be extended as the shop is needed for our own use.

The gentleman a few months back, knowing that he has to vacate the shop in September 2009, sublet a portion of the shop to someone else.

It is clearly mentioned in the agreement that no subletting is allowed, yet without any intimation or permission he had the courage to sublet it. Now he is demanding that I should further renew the agreement for another three years.

Here I would also like to mention that not only delayed payment of rent is a regular feature but the gentleman has not paid the CDA's water bills for the last many years amounting to Rs56,000 and the authority has not taken any action so far.

I would request the Chief Justice of Pakistan, despite his very hectic schedule, to please look into the matter and order implementation of the Rent Control Act in Islamabad and elsewhere which protects the rights of both lesser and lessee so that such blackmailing tactics of qabza groups are eliminated forever.
