ISLAMABAD: A special Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) in Rawalpindi granted bail to Gen (r) Pervez Musharraf in the Benazir murder case on Monday whereas the Supreme Court of Pakistan adjourned its hearing of the treason case against the former president to May 22, DawnNews reported.

Counsel for former military ruler Musharraf had filed a bail petition in the Rawalpindi ATC which has been hearing the Benazir murder case. The request for bail was granted today by the bench hearing the case.

Earlier, the Federal Investigation Agency’s (FIA) prosecutor had objected to the bail plea on grounds that Musharraf might flee the country in case he was granted bail after which the bench had reserved its decision.

Moreover, the Supreme Court bench hearing the treason case against Musharraf adjourned the case’s hearing to May22.

Supreme Court’s Justice Jawwad S. Khawaja remarked during the Musharraf treason case hearing that the viewpoint of the Parliament was crucial to the case, adding that the Parliament had already legislated on the punishment for treason and the Federal Interior Secretary must be a complainant in treason case.
