KARACHI, May 27: Pakistan’s world amateur snooker champion Mohammad Asif on Monday added another feather in his cap when he inflicted a 7-4 defeat on Iran’s Aamir Sarkosh to clinch the second 6-Red Asian Snooker Championship in Doha, Qatar.

Asif overcame preceding bad patch while registering an authoritative 43-0, 48-0, 48-12, 12-36, 30-34, 34-31, 40-9, 0-41, 0-41, 54-4, 41-13 victory over his opponent in the best-of-13-frames final.

Earlier, Asif sent Indian Laxman Rawat packing 6-2 in the semi-final and defeated compatriot Mohammad Sajjad by the identical margin of 6-2 in the quarters.

Sarkosh had lost to Omar Al Kojah of Syria 5-6 in a nail-biting semi-final of the 29th Asian Snooker Championship held in Karachi earlier this month.

Earlier, Asif topped his group by getting the better of Mohammad Khaled Al Quraini of Jordan 5-1, Ali Jalil Ali of Iraq 5-1 and Mohanna Obaidly of Qatar 5-2 to cruise into the knockout round of last 16. He brushed aside Mohammad Shehab of the UAE 5-1 in the pre-quarters.

After winning the world crown in Sofia, Bulgaria, on Dec 2, Asif was completely off colour in the national snooker championship where he failed to qualify for the knockout stage. His poor performance saw his national ranking slipped to 19th position.

Again, the reigning world champion was knocked out in the pre-quarterfinal of the Asian Snooker Championship by Hong Kong’s Lee Chun Wai by 4-3 frames before the home crowd.

Meanwhile, Pakistan open their campaign against Kuwait in the first Asian team event on Tuesday afternoon. This will be followed by the second match against Hong Kong in the evening.

Pakistan will be represented by national champion Hamza Akbar and Asian under-21 No 2 Mohammad Majid Ali in the team event.
