Tauqir Sadiq to be handed to Pakistan within a month: NAB official

KARACHI: A court in Abu Dhabi has ordered former Ogra chief Tauqir Sadiq to be handed over to Pakistan within a month, a National Accountability Bureau official told Dawn.com on Monday.

The court order against tainted former chief of Pakistan’s Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) was given on the request of the Pakistani government.

Tauqir Sadiq has been declared a proclaimed offender and is also a principal accused in a Rs82 billion corruption case.

He fled abroad soon after the Supreme Court declared his appointment as Ogra chief illegal on Nov 25, 2012, and ordered NAB to arrest him.

Sadiq managed to leave the country although his name was on the exit control list.

Two former prime ministers — Yousuf Raza Gilani and Raja Pervez Ashraf — have been accused of being involved in the ‘illegal’ appointment of Sadiq.

Ogra case will be a test case for Nawaz Sharif Government. I hope this case will not be covered up in favor of "Re-conciliation Policy" of PML-N and PPP. Tauqeer Sadiq was a just the front man. One brought back to Pakistan and put to task, he will name all the Pious leaders of Pakistan, who otherwise cleared Article 62 and 63 during elections. Now all eyes will be on PML-N to ensure free and fair NAB process.

The NAB has suddenly woken up. This institution is infested with mostly corrupt people who pander to the politicians. Who were the persons protecting Tauqir Sadique. Catch them also.

Depending where one is at in UAE; it is only an hour ride to the Airport and about 2-1/2 flight to Karachi. Why a month? Is he swimming?

One must question the role of UAE delaying tactics of handing over a Pakistani fugitive wanted by the courts of a sovereign democratic country. One must also not forget the military Shamsi Airfield, also known as Bhandari Airstrip which was leased to the UAE in 1992. That Pakistani base was further allowed by UAE to be used by the United States Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) to carry drone attacks. Who need enemies when we have good friends as our brothers.
