Book on Sindh history published

KARACHI, June 10: A book written by Dr Mohammad Ali Sheikh on the history of Sindh — A monograph of Sindh through the centuries — has been published.

According to a statement issued here on Monday, the book covering Sindh from its ancient period to the modern day is part of the second international conference on ‘Sindh through the centuries’, which will be organised by the SMIU between Dec 16 and Dec 18.

The author is a professor of media studies presently serving as the vice chancellor of the Sindh Madressatul Islam University. He holds a PhD in mass communication and has served as faculty-fellow/ Fulbright Scholar at the American University in Washington DC. He has also served as the director of the SZABIST Centre for information and research in Karachi.

Dr Sheikh has previously written a book titled “Satellite television and social change in Pakistan: A case study of rural Sindh”.

In the latest book, Dr Sheikh has tried to cover major periods of Sindh —Indus valley civilisation, Vedic era, Buddhist era and Islamic era.

Similarly, he has emphasised to re-explore the changes that came in the Sindhi society during the British rule and after the creation of Pakistan. He has also discussed culture, social and political life and development of Sindh folklore, Baloch migration and local dynasties.

A number of rare pictures have also been made part of the book that has enhanced its beauty and importance, the statement said.

The book has been designed by Shaista M. Ali and Abdullah Thebo and published by the SMIU Press, Karachi. —APP
