KARACHI, June 24: Three people were gunned down in the city in as many targeted attacks apparently on sectarian and political grounds on Monday, police said.
They said that the owner of a poultry shop was gunned down in Gulshan-i-Iqbal.
Raja Nadeem Abbas, 40, was shot at and wounded by two gunmen in Block-6 near Zuhra Square, where he had his shop.
He was taken to a private hospital where doctors pronounced him dead.
Gulshan-i-Iqbal SHO Irfan Ahmed said although the victim was Shia, it appeared that he was killed over some personal enmity and the killing was not motivated by sectarian reasons.
He said that the victim had no affiliation with any religious or political party.
However, a spokesman for the Majlis Wahdat-i-Muslimeen (MWM) claimed that the victim was targeted due to sectarian reasons.
He said that he was a trustee of the Imambargah Madinatul Ilm in Gulshan-i-Iqbal.
Youth found shot dead The bullet-riddled body of a young man was found in the Memon Goth area on Monday.
Police said that the body was found near Jam Goth.
The victim, identified as Afzal Shah, 22, sustained three bullet wounds.
He was a resident of Jafar-i-Tayar Society, Malir and worked in a garments factory.
Memon Goth SHO Rao Khalid said it appeared that the victim was kidnapped and killed somewhere else and later the body was dumped in their area. He said that the motive for the killing could not be ascertained immediately.
However, the MWM spokesman told Dawn that the murder was motivated by sectarian considerations.
Man killed in Agra Taj Colony A young man was shot dead in Agra Taj Colony on Monday, police said.
They said that Abdul Razzak aka Raju, 27, was sitting at a roadside eatery when two armed motorcyclists targeted him and rode away.
He sustained a single bullet wound in the chest and was taken to the Civil Hospital Karachi where doctors pronounced him dead.
Kalri SHO Haji Sanaullah said that the victim was Kutchhi and his family did not want to pursue the case.
Trader gunned down A 64-year-old trader was shot dead in the Defence area on Monday, police said.
They said circumstantial evidence and eyewitness account suggested that Sheikh Masood was shot by a man in his car on Khayaban-i-Jami near the Friday Bazaar close to the Defence police station.
They said that the victim ran for safety in a wounded condition, but the killer fired two more bullets from behind. He fell down at some distance near the Defence police station and died.
There was a dispute of jurisdiction between the Korangi Industrial Area (KIA) and the Defence police stations as the victim was wounded within the remit of the KIA police station and died in the Defence police limits. Finally, it was settled that a case would be registered at the Korangi Industrial Area police station regarding the incident.
“The murder seems to be related to some monetary dispute,” said SSP-East Imran Shaukat.
He said the police got a significant clue and the killer had been identified. He would be arrested soon, he added.
Quoting the victim’s family, the SSP said that the suspect, a friend of the victim, had called him on his cellphone from his residence in Defence Phase-II. “They met and sat together, chatted with each other and later a scuffle broke out between them, which resulted in the murder.”
The body was shifted to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for a post-mortem examination.
The victim originally hailed from Chiniot and said to be a trader at Jodia Bazaar.
