On the event of Shab-e-Barat, muslims gather at mosques to mark Shab-e-Barat or the night of forgiveness in Karachi.
It is belived that if someone prays to God throughout the night and seeks forgiveness for all the sins he may have committed, he could be forgiven. The entire night of prayer is devoted to asking for forgiveness for the past year and for good fortune in the year to come.

Unfortunately, there are maudoo' (fabricated) or daeef (doubtful authenticity) hadith on praying all night on the 15th of Shabaan. This is a conspiracy against Shab-e-Qadr of Ramzan, where all the things people mistakenly associate with the 15th of Shabaan happen. In Shab-e-Qadr of Ramzan the Divine Decrees for the year descend. People ask for forgiveness. This night occurs on one of the last odd nights of Ramzan.
Evidence from the Quran:

Ha, Meem.
By the clear Book,
Indeed, We sent it down during a blessed night. Indeed, We were to warn [mankind].
On that night is made distinct every precise matter

This whole concept is based on fabricated Ahadith and this night has no solid grounding in the Quran or Sunnah and anyone holding special prayers or anything on this night, his or her actions come under biddah. Dawn news please stop spreading these misconceptions on your websites and be a little responsible with your reporting methods.

@gangadin:
Nonsense in the sense that it is innovation. There is no such thing SHAB E BARAAT, if any person who prays 5 times a day and do good ( as a human being he commits sins unknowingly) and ask forgiveness making dua all the time is sufficient for a person. NO NEED TO STAND ALL NIGHT PRAYING once in a year !
