KARACHI, April 20: Holders Aga Khan University (AKU) overcame last quarter hiccups while getting the better of Dow University of Health Science (DUHS) by 12-7 points to retain the title in the fifth AKU Inter-university girls’ basketball tournament at their own premises on Saturday.

The AKU come under tremendous pressure in the last two quarters following a brisk start that enabled them led by 7-0 points at the breather.

The AKU could only muster three points in the third raising their tally to 10 as DUHS scored two. However, a fighting DUHS made the final interesting by winning the fourth and last quarter 5-2 but it vain.

Zainab Afzal emerged top scorer for winners with six points. She was followed by Rida Shahid three. Khalida Soomro and Nabiha Chaudhary scored four and two points respectively for the losers.

This is AKU’s overall third title triumph in the tournament.

Rida Shahid, captain of the AKU, received the winner’s trophy from the chief guest, Dr. Nuzhat Faruqui, Assistant Professor and Consultant Urology AKU, amidst applause.

Sabrina Khan, captain of the DUHS, was awarded the runners-up trophy.

Riaz Akbar Contractor, chairman of the organising committee, was also present.—Sports Correspondent
