LAHORE: Ashura was marred by sectarian clashes in Lahore and a Khairpur village, Theri, yesterday (June 3) taking toll of some lives. Many persons were injured and admitted to hospitals.

In Lahore the district authorities today (June 4) lifted the curfew following considerable improvement in the situation during the night.

In Khairpur services of the Indus Rangers were called in to help the local Police. Section 144 has been imposed and the Deputy Inspector-General of Police is himself supervising the preventive measures. A dusk to dawn curfew has been imposed.

The clash took place when the house where a Majlis was being held, was set on fire. The Deputy Commissioner of Khairpur and the Superintendent of Police rushed to the spot and the situation was soon brought under control.

President’s response

SARGODHA: President Mohammad Ayub Khan today (June 4) condemned the disturbances which occurred on the Ashura in Lahore.

He said: some mischie-vous elements and their personal rivalries were responsible for the incident which has brought a bad name to the country. No civilised nation should tolerate such things, he remarked. — Agencies
