TRADERS: The arrest of five traders by the district administration sparked strong protest in the district.

The administration arrested five traders and sent them to Haripur jail under 3 MPO during Iftar time. The shopkeepers of Tehsil Bazaar observed a shutter down strike and staged a sit-in outside Charsadda police station against arrest of their colleagues.

The elected representatives also joined the protesting traders in the sit-in against the district administration. They demanded immediate transfer of assistant and additional commissioners.

The protesters alleged that the district administration in the garb of anti-encroachment drive was teasing traders. They alleged that they had held protest demonstration against huge fines, arrest and raids on their shops that led to arrest of some traders. The detained traders were identified as Mian Mufariq Shah, Iftikhar Hussain, Lal Mohammad, Habib Khan and Andullah. The detained traders said they were ready to render any kind of sacrifice for the rights of businessmen.

Earlier, the shopkeepers of Tangi Road staged a protest demonstration against frequent raids on their businesses outlets and imposition of heavy fines by the district administration.

Tajir Ittehad president Maulana Salahuddin and general secretary Haji Iftikhar Hussain addressed the protesters and alleged that illegal crackdown was launched against the local traders.

They said that traders were already suffering losses owing to loadshedding and price hike. The illegal crackdown by the local administration had further aggravated the situation, they said.

The Tajir Ittehad, they said, would hold a protest rally in front of the deputy commissioner office on Friday. They demanded of the administration to stop action against traders.
