THIS is with reference to your editorial ‘Shady transactions: DHA dealings’ (July 21). Another project about which there are many rumours is the DHA Cogen Plant Project in Karachi, which was supposed to desalinate sea water and provide 94 MW of electricity to the residents of DHA in Karachi.
This $115m project never saw the light of day, and turned out to be a flop.
If it ever gets completed, the project cost will be multiplied many times.
The DHA is least bothered and no inquiry has ever been held to fix responsibility for the failure of the project. In fact, there was some talk a few months back about adding new machinery to increase the project capacity, wasting more taxpayers’ money.

Where is the accountability? DHA is headed by a serving Brigadier of Army with Commander 5 Corps as its Chairman. Hence existence of such shady projects costing huge public funds under their command is an irony.

Army should pull out of this 'badnam-e-zamana' business. It gives the impression that army is a land-grabber like many violent wings of the political parties that indulge in same kind of activities. A case is pending in SC against the DHA for malpratices. once upon a time the Karachi land was appropriated by the Pakistan Navy. Then COAS being stronger than the CNS usurped the title of deed to all the Karachi coastal area. Thus started the corrupt practices of enriching the army officers through land deals giving unfair advantage to this particular segment of society at the cost of others. The imbalance created frictions in the populace and a rat race started to occupy the lands at all cost.
