CHITRAL, Aug 20: Six people were killed and three injured when a jeep fell into a ravine in Washich village in remote Torkhow valley of upper Chitral early on Tuesday, police said.

Chitral police identified the dead as driver Taighun Zar, Maulana Faizullah, Mir Madad, daughter of Mir Madad and Ashrafi Khan. Officials at the district headquarters hospital told Dawn that an injured girl, Maryam, 10, succumbed to injuries in the hospital, raising the toll to six.

Police said the vehicle was going to Washich village from Chitral city. They said driver lost control over the vehicle after he reportedly fell asleep.

Meanwhile, in another traffic accident at Damil Arandu, a woman was killed and two persons were injured, local police said.

NDMA CHIEF VISITS FLOOD HIT VILLAGES: National Disaster Management Authority Chairman Maj-Gen Mohammad Saeed Aleem on Tuesday visited the flood hit villages of Reshun and Bumburate here.

He was accompanied by PDMA officials, Malakand division commissioner and Chitral deputy commissioner.

Mr Aleem distributed cash compensation among the affected people in both the villages. He assured them of all out support of the government for their rehabilitation. He said infrastructure and the homes devastated by the flash floods would be rebuilt.

The NDMA chairman said the prime minister had directed him to rush to the affected villages in Chitral so the federal government could give a comprehensive relief and rehabilitation package to mitigate the sufferings of the affected people. — Correspondent
