SUKKUR: The population of Sukkur town is expected to rise to two lakhs during the next 20 years, if the present pace of increase in population continues in this town. The present population of Sukkur, according to the latest census, is 1,03,000.

This was disclosed by Mr Peter Brigham, Architect and Town Planner of the Republic Engineering Corporation, Lahore, while addressing a special meeting of the Sukkur Municipal Committee here last night (Sept 17).

The Republic Engineering Corporation has been engaged by the Sukkur Municipal Committee for the preparation of a master plan for Sukkur.

Mr Brigham told the Municipal members that Sukkur had a bright future ahead and it was going to be a very important and prosperous business and industrial centre in this region within the next decade.

As such, he added, the future expected growth of the town and its requirements should be kept in view while preparing its master plan and taking up its further development.

Mr Brigham later told journalists that the Corporation had already completed the population survey of Sukkur town. It had also almost completed the traffic, land use, socio-economic, housing, commercial and industrial surveys.

A short-term plan for immediate execution, he said was expected to be ready by the end of this year. — Agencies
