SWABI, Sept 25: Angry people placed the body of a young man at Kernal Sher Khan Chowk here on Wednesday and blocked the traffic in protest against his killing by robbers and failure of the police to provide them security and check crimes.

According to details, one Mohammad Tariq and his father Mohammad Tahir were on way to Salim Khan area from the district headquarters hospital on their motorcycle on Tuesday night when unknown robbers brandishing guns signalled them to stop on Salim Khan-Maneri road.

The robbers opened fire on them when they did not stop and as a result both were seriously injured. Later, Mr Tariq succumbed to his injuries at the district headquarters hospital.

The protesters alleged that the law and order had broken down in the district and the police had failed to provide security to residents, as robbery incidents had increased manifold. The agitated residents picked the body and reached the Kernal Sher Khan Chowk, covering a distance of about five kilometres on foot.

On way to the district headquarters the people of Maneri and surrounding areas also joined the protesters of Salim Khan area and chanted slogans against the failure of district administration.

By staging a protest at the junction point of Kernal Sher Khan Chowk they effectively blocked traffic on Swabi-Mardan, Swabi-Jehangira and Swabi-Topi routes.

In a prompt action, district police officer Sajjad Khan, however, suspended the entire staff of Salim police post.

Later, a group of elders from the affected party held talks with deputy police officer Shah Jehan, who assured them that the killers of Mr Tariq would be arrested within three days. The protesters later peacefully ended their protest and took the body for burial.
