LAHORE, Nov 23: Khalid Bin Waleed Cup features in a nine-race competitive card drawn for the Lahore Winter Meeting at the Lahore Racecourse here on Sunday.

To be gone over the middle distance of 1400 metres, a class-five handicap race has a ten-runner field.

The cup contenders, four of whom have demonstrated classic performances worth their fine pedigrees, are vying for supremacy.

However, weight the runners carry in the handicap and the condition they are sent in to compete will be the real deciding factors in a finish, expected to be close between the top three performers – Sofian Prince, Kokab and Subah Sadiq, as given below in our selections.

With the advent of winter season horse owners have started entering their horses into races as the total strength of runners have touched the highest figure of 97 acceptors for the nine events on Sunday.

Sad to relate a new trend that has surfaced recently among owners, who instead of backing their own horse being in good chance took chances on some friend’s horse running in the same race in order to fix the race.

However, to the great luck of punters they failed in their nefarious designs to malign the genteel sport. One such case came to light on a day when most of the racing elite were present.

In a couple of other cases the horses belonging to sons of two deceased stewards of the Lahore Race Club (LRC) were not allowed to run on merit and the LRC stewards possessed by the love of their departed colleagues let them go with a warning instead of putting a muzzle on their greed for money.

A large number of race fans talking to Dawn despised the owners involved and suggested that such cases be referred to steward Makhdoom Syed Ahmed Mahmood for taking action.

The first four events will be contested over the sprinting distance of 800 metres, two over 1000 metres, one over 1400 metres and the last two over 1200 metres.

The first race will start at 11:30am.
