SWABI, Nov 24: Unidentified attackers gunned down a traffic police constable in the main bazaar here on Sunday.

The victim, constable Husnain Khan, was on duty when two motorcyclists opened indiscriminate fire on him. As result, he was seriously injured and taken to the district headquarters hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. It was not immediately known from where the motorcyclists had come, but the shopkeepers said that when the suspected militants opened fire on the policeman everyone was running for cover. Some of them said that they fled on their motorcycle taking Swabi-Mardan road.

The police have registered an FIR in the city police station against unknown militants. The incident occurred four days after the police killed four militants when they attacked a police post in Razar tehsil.

Meanwhile, police officials said that three of the four attackers, who were killed during an assault on Nathyan police checkpost last week, had been identified.

They said that all the three belonged to different villages of Swabi district. He said that security had been heightened across the district after the three were identified. Among the identified attackers Habibur Rehman belonged to Bamkhel, Miyad Ali to Sard Cheena and Naseemur Rehman Kunda village.

The officials said that bodies of the attackers were exhumed and handed over to their relatives. The police said that identity of the fourth attacker would be established soon.

District police officer Sajjad Khan said that around a dozen terrorists had attacked the checkpost, which was repulsed by the police. Four attackers were killed, while the rest escaped after the encounter. —Correspondent
