KARACHI, Nov 28: Top seed Tayyab Aslam ended the year on triumphant note while registering straight victory over Israr Gul to retain boys under-19 title in the US $ 11,000 fifth Roshan Khan juniors open squash championship which concluded at the PN Roshan-Jahangir Squash Complex on Thursday.
Tayyab, who has many feathers in his cap, enthralled audience in his 11-9, 11-9, 11-7 victory over Israr in all-Punjab final that lasted for 42 minutes.
“I was confident to retain the title and things went my way,” a jubilant Tayyab, who is a contractual employee in Zarai Tarraqiati Bank Limited (ZTBL), told Dawn.
The Lahore-based Tayyab, who turns 19 after six months, has shown promise in the recent past. He was member of the victorious Pakistan team that won Asian junior team event title by getting the better of India in the final in South Korea this year. He was also part of the team that lost world junior title to Egypt in Qatar last year besides making fourth round exit in this year’s world individual championship at Poland.
Fourth seed Kashif Asif landed the boys under-17 crown inflicting 11-5, 11-4, 11-3 defeat on sixth seed Sumaid Rasheed.
In the other events, top seeds M. Faizan Khan, Haris Qasim, M. Denial Ghanoori (Iran) and M. Ammad lived up to their billings while landing boys under-15, under-13, under-11 and under-9 titles respectively.
As far as girls are concerned, Sadia Gul also retained her crown routing Faiza Zafar 11-9, 8-11, 11-4, 11-1 in 24 minutes.
Madina Zafar, Aiman Shahbaz and Fatima Zafar picked up under-17, under-15 and under-11 titles respectively.
General Manager Corporate Affairs, Parco, Shah Saad Hussain, who graced the prize distribution, gave away the prizes. Tayyab received Rs85,600 while Israr got Rs53,500.
Also present on the occasion among others were former World Squash Federation president Jahangir Khan, managing director of Jubilee General Insurance, Tahir Ahmed, officials of Sindh Squash Association, Tahir Khanzada, Mohammad Amir Khan and Abdul Samad Khan.
