Published March 27, 2002

ABBOTTABAD, March 26: One Safya Bibi of Bandi Sarara, Abbottabad, died of burns, which she suffered two days back in mysterious circumstances, in the Ayub Medical Complex here.

According to the FIR and the burn victim’s last statement recorded before the doctors and police officials just before her death, Shamim Akhter, wife of Fayaz and Mumtaz, son of Ghulam Hassain, after pouring kerosene oil over Safya, set her on fire.

The accused threw the burnt woman in a deep ditch, from where she was recovered in critical condition and brought to the hospital. She told the police and doctors at her death bed that the accused had blamed a theft case on her, which she denied, and said the theft was actually done by the accused lady.

The sad part of the story is that her husband Riaz did not come forward to rescue her.
