DADU, June 20: On the call of the Anti-Greater Thal Canal Action Committee, a protest demonstration was held here on Thursday to protest against the construction of the greater Thal canal.

Hundreds of activists belonging to different political parties, NGOs, and social organizations participated in the protest.

The protest march started from the Degree College Dadu, marched through various roads of the town and gathered outside the press club where a demonstration was held for one hour.

The protesters were led by the general secretary, PPP, Dadu, Dost Ali Jeesar, and the district president, PPP ladies wing, Dadu, Qulsoom Chandio.

Speaking to the protesters, PPP leader Dost Ali Jeesar said that the establishment had stopped the Indus River water, which had destroyed the agricultural system and the economy of Sindh and now construction of the Thal canal was being carried out on a war-footing, which would further harm Sindh.

He said the government should stop work at the greater Thal canal and use the entire budget of the greater Thal canal for the welfare of the province.

Later, the protesters observed token hunger strike outside the press club.

OUTLAWS HELD: Three outlaws were arrested by the Dadu town police on the Indus Highway, near Dadu, on Thursday.

The TPO, Dadu city, Mohammad Aslam, told newsmen that the SHO, Town police, Inspector Ghulam Akbar Chandio, was patrolling the Indus Highway, when a gang of outlaws opened fire on the police near the Koharo petrol pump.

In retaliation, police also opened fire. After half an hour, police were able to arrest three outlaws identified as Ghulam Nabi Shaikh, Khadim Bahoto, and Majeed Korejo.

He said that the police recovered a double-barrel gun, two single-barrel guns and 25 cartridges from their possession.
