God forbid, if a major quake hit Karachi, it would cause a human catastrophe of unimaginable proportion. This great metropolis is densely populated and a large number of people live in multistory but poorly built buildings. The collapse of such constructions, coupled with domino effects will be a nightmare for those who will start rescue operations. Literally millions of people will lose their lives stranded beneath the rubble. Who do you think is proactive enough in this country to think about this possibility? Is our disaster management authority (that is formed to 'react' but not to anticipate the disaster) ready to face such possible calamity? Is civil defense, local government (which is already made lame by the provincial government), or for that matter army prepared to respond to such situation. We must remember the fact that Karachi is economic capital of Pakistan. If it dies, God forbid, Pakistan will also die with it.
