PESHAWAR: The sixth death anniversary of former prime minister and Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) ex-chairperson Benazir Bhutto was observed with reverence in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on Friday.

In Peshawar, the main function was organised under the aegis of People’s Doctors Forum (PDF) at the press club. A large number of party workers attended the function and paid tribute to late Benazir Bhutto for her sacrifices for democracy in the country.

Addressing the party workers, PDF president Dr Nisar Khan said that the Bhutto family had always raised voice for the rights of the poor and downtrodden. The PPP founding leaders, he said, had always stood with the labourers against capitalists, feudal lords and industrialists. They never hesitated from offering any sacrifice for the sake of poor and labour class.

A number of leaders, including PDF provincial general secretary Ihsan Turabi, Dr Daud, PPP provincial coordinator Ayub Shah, senior vice-president Azam Afridi, Youth wing leader Ejaz Yousafzai and People’s Lawyers Forum’s Mohim Afridi also spoke on the occasion.

He said that following in the footprints of her parents, Ms Bhutto in her early age had taken the responsibility of raising voice for the rights of the poor, and finally rendered sacrifice of her life. They added that though terrorists apparently succeeded to silence the voice of BB, but her mission would continue till the poor got their due rights.

They said that Ms Bhutto became the first women premier of the country, who had the courage to stand up against the capitalists and industrialists due to which her opponents levelled charges of corruption against her.

The leaders said that despite threats to her life Ms Bhutto came back through a deal in order to serve the poor people of this country. She stood firm even against dictators and that was why she was eliminated for no reason, the PPP leaders said. On this occasion, The speakers also criticised the party’s central and provincial leadership for allegedly sabotaging the mission of PPP founders and ignoring the workers. They said that certain opportunists had taken control of the party for their personal interests. They vowed to continue the mission of their leaders who rendered matchless sacrifices for democracy in the country.
