BEIJING: Fourteen people have died after a stampede at a mosque in northern China, a state news agency said Monday.

The incident occurred Sunday afternoon at the mosque in Guyuan, a city in the Ningxia region, the Xinhua News Agency said.

People at the mosque were handing out traditional cakes during an event to commemorate a religious figure.

Another 10 people were hospitalised, four of them in critical condition, Xinhua said.

Ningxia is the home of China's Muslim Hui ethnic minority.
