PESHAWAR: A policeman was killed and another sustained injuries in a bomb blast near a checkpoint in the limits of Regi Model Town police station here on Tuesday.

An official said that the bomb was planted near the checkpoint at night. Policemen usually remained on duty till sunset and terrorists planted the bomb taking advantage of their absence, he added.

The bomb was detonated in the morning when policemen were performing duty there, the official said, adding constable Mir Azam Khan was killed and Mohammad Iqbal sustained wounds in the blast.

The injured constable was shifted to Khyber Teaching Hospital where doctors described his position stable.

Following the blast, police launched a crackdown and arrested scores of suspected people in the area.

Meanwhile, police have failed to arrest the people involved in the assassination of Awami National Party leader Mian Mushtaq Ahmed, who was killed few days ago in Mashokhel area of Badhber.

An official said that raids were conducted at several places and many people were picked for interrogation but the terrorists could not be apprehended.

He said that most of the suburban areas were infested with militants and their number was increasing.

The official said that government should deploy Frontier Constabulary in the areas near Fata to keep check on the movement of suspected elements otherwise the menace of terrorism could not be controlled.

He said that politicians should either avoid unnecessary movement in the militants-infested areas or keep proper security guards with them as police could not guard everyone in the prevailing situation.

Meanwhile, two persons identified as Qari Zia and his uncle Sareer Khan were killed in their house by unidentified men in Gharibabad locality on Wednesday morning.

An official of Paharipura police station said that the victims belonged to Tarnaw village of Charsadda district and it was yet to be ascertained if they had enmity or not.

He said that they were living in the house but it was not clear as to what was their source of income.
