MUZAFFARGARH: Two more suspects were arrested by police on Friday out of the nine accused in the case of a panchayat ordering a gang-rape here in Ihsanpur’s Basti Radiwala.

Late on Thursday, police from Dera Din Pannah and other police stations raided and arrested six accused who were sent to jail on judicial remand except Yaseen who was on physical remand. One of the suspects was granted pre-arrest bail.

Station House Officer Ramzan Shahid said Yaseen was the main culprit and the police had got his physical remand for three days. He said on Monday the victim would go to Lahore for a DNA test. He said the police would not force her to get it done.

On Thursday, a panchayat had ordered gang-rape of a 40-year-old woman after her brother was allegedly caught with a woman of the village on Jan 24.

On Friday, the Pakistan Ulema Council after the prayers protested in front of the local press club against the incident and demanded the case be sent to the Anti-Terrorism Court and the accused be punished.

Mukhtar Mai, a women’s rights activist, demanded a high-level inquiry into the incident.
