KARACHI: An investigation carried out by the Monitoring and Evaluation Cell of Sindh government’s Planning and Development Department into reports of performance of the water desalination plants installed in the interior of province has found that about 80 per cent of the such plants set up by one of the contracting company were fully functional, whereas the remaining were either being upgraded or repaired.

A report sent to the Sindh Coal Authority of the provincial government states that the physical inspection of these desalination plants, working on the system of reverse osmosis, showed that most of the water purification plants set up by Pak Oasis Industries in Thatta, Badin, Tharparkar and Umerkot were fully functional.

The investigation was ordered following reports that whereas contracts worth tens of millions of rupees were given to various water purification companies for the installation of such filter plants in various districts of Sindh, many of them were either malfunctioning or had remained idle. The department has also sent its findings about the performance of all the companies that were awarded the contract to the National Accountability Bureau.
