KARACHI: A day after a militant attack in which 13 police commandos were killed, a senior officer of the Rangers was attacked by a suicide bomber in the city’s Qayumabad area on Friday morning. The officer, his guard and driver remained unhurt.

According to Korangi SP Usman Ijaz Bajwa, the Rangers sector commander was going from the Defence Housing Authority to his office in the Nursery area when the suicide bomber aged about 20 years blew himself up in front of the vehicle. The vehicle’s front portion was affected by the blast and its engine was damaged.

A bomb disposal squad official said the bomb weighed about 6kg and contained ball bearings of different sizes.

Police Surgeon Dr Jalil Qadir said parts of the bomber’s body had been brought to the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre and fingerprints of the ‘bomber’ had been sent to the National Database and Registration Authority for identification.

“The botched suicide attack could be part of the ongoing terrorist attacks on law-enforcement agencies to demoralise them,” the superintendent of police said.

“This kind of cowardly attempts will strengthen our resolve to fight terrorism in all its manifestation,” a Rangers spokesman said.
