Inquiry against Shahnaz urged

LAHORE, June 30: Wapda would call Pakistan hockey manager Shahnaz Sheikh, team members Sohail Abbas and Waseem Ahmad to conduct an inquiry to find out who is reponsible for allowing the players to play in league abroad.

Wapda Sports Control Board secretary Khalid Mahmood said on Monday Col Nadeem Rustam had been appointed inquiry officer by Wapda on the directive of the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF).

Both the national players who represent Wapda at home, went to play in professional league in Germany without the consent of the PHF. Wapda has alleged they went abroad on the instigation of Shahnaz. Shahnaz denies the charges.

Wapda official said his department had asked the PHF that it was PHF’s duty to instruct Shahnaz to appear before the inquiry officer. He said the players were bound to appear before the inquiry officer.

He said inquiry was expected to be completed within days after the arrival of the players from Germany where they still were busy in playing in the league.

According to unofficial reports, he said, Sohail and Waseem had made reservations for July 7 and 12 respectively.

Shahnaz said from Sialkot he had not received any instruction from the PHF to appear before an inquiry officer.

Asked whether he would appear before the inquiry officer if asked by the PHF, he avoided to give a reply saying “it is too early to comment on this.”
