CHITRAL: It rained in Chitral for third consecutive day on Monday, while the upper part of the district received snow up to three feet blocking roads to Garam Chashma, Terich, Khot, Rech, Yarkhoon and Laspur valleys.

According to the Met Office, the district has received more than 87 millimeters rain during the last three days.

It said the rain is likely to continue for one more day.

The snowfall on Lowari Pass has led to the disconnection of Chitral from the national grid causing suspension of power supply to the region.

The rain forced the people to stay indoors. As a result, the bazaars wore a deserted look, while educational institutions saw a very thin attendance.

Partial damage to mud houses has been reported in many areas. However, no casualty has been reported.

Amir Mohammad, regional programme manager of Focus Humanitarian Assistance, an organ of Aga Khan Foundation working on natural disasters response, said no one died in rain-related incidents in Chitral as reported by his organisations’ volunteers based in every local village.

He said his organisation was on red alert to meet any emergency.

In Mingora, a landslide triggered by heavy rain blocked Kalam Road at two points between Bahrain and Kalam valley on Sunday night.

Kalam Road, which is under construction, was closed to traffic after heavy showers caused the landslide in Jakh and Asreet.

Swat Deputy Commissioner Imtaiz Hussain Shah said the Army engineering corps personnel had begun work to reopen the road connecting Kalam valley to other parts of the district.

Also in the day, rain continued to lash the Swat bringing the temperature down.

The rain began on Sunday.

Mansehra, Battagram, Kohistan and Torghar districts, too, on Monday received heavy showers increasing the misery of labourers as well as those stranded in Kaghan valley for two weeks.

The rain, which began early in the morning and continued throughout the day intermittently, lowered the chances of the reopening of Balakot-Naran section of Mansehra-Naran-Jalkhad Road, which was blocked due to the heavy landslide at various points earlier this month.

The continuous rain has led to the closure of work on the road for two week.

Also in the day, Parachinar and other parts of Kurram Agency received heavy rainfall and snowfall damaging mud houses and blocking roads.

However, no damage to human life was reported.
