Pakistan fall to spirited India in Super-10 opener

India maintained their impeccable World Cup record against Pakistan after Virat Kohli's fluent 36 not out powered them to a seven-wicket victory against the arch-rivals in a group two super 10 stage match of the World Twenty20 on Friday.
Put into bat, Pakistan did not get the flying start they were looking for and could not mount a late assault either against India's disciplined bowlers who restricted them to 130-7 at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.
India made a strong, if not spectacular, start to their chase with their openers adding 54 runs in eight overs before Shikhar Dhawan (30) fell to Umar Gul to trigger a mini-collapse.
Rohit Sharma (24) dragged a Saeed Ajmal delivery on to his stumps while Bilawal Bhatti rearranged Yuvraj Singh's stumps as India slumped to 65-3 in the 11th over.
Kohli displayed the kind of form that has made him the mainstay of Indian batting, playing with characteristic ease and grace to add 66 runs with Suresh Raina (35 not out) to win the match with nine balls to spare and prolong India's unbeaten record against Pakistan in 20-over and 50-over World Cups.
Wary of the dew factor and confident of his team's ability to chase under floodlights, India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni earlier asked Pakistan to bat first and opened with off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin.
Kamran Akmal warmed up with a couple of boundaries before running himself out in the second over following a comical mix-up with Ahmed Shehzad.
Shehzad featured in another confusion in the very next delivery but was fortunate as Dhoni's direct throw missed stumps as the batsman hurried back abandoning his pursuit for a non-existent single.
Hafeez also had his share of luck as Yuvraj, usually a safe catcher, dropped him at deep midwicket off Mohammad Shami when the Pakistan captain was on five.

Hafeez (15) could not make the most of the reprieve and fell to Ravindra Jadeja's third delivery after Bhuvaneshwar Kumar ran from deep cover to take a low, diving catch.
Shehzad (22) joined him in the pavilion in the next over, having charged out only to be completely foxed by leg-spinner Amit Mishra's prodigious turn.
Umar Akmal (33) added 50 runs with Shoaib Malik (18) but fell to Mishra just when he looked set for a late assault to push the score.
Much depended on Shahid Afridi when he walked in but the all-rounder fell for eight as Raina took a diving catch in the deep to snuff out Pakistan's hopes of a late surge.

I am wondering what is Shoib Malik doing in the team ? he must have a very very strong Parchi to be still here,his batting along with cautious approach of Umar Akmal who wasted 2 balls and 8 overs nearly half the match to just manage 50 runs partnership and 68% strike rate of Hafeez. Thats what cost us the match.Along with Umar Gul who did not bowl a single Yorker and gave away the most runs.We could have given the ball to Shoib Malik if Indian spinners were doing well

Little slack and scratchy performance by both teams, especially by Pakistan. You can see the nervousness on the faces of Pakistani players and I think public should not use their respective players as a medium of rivalry. It was a game of cricket and better team on a given day won it. Pakistan needs some overhaul in their unit, Umar Akmal and Shoaib Malik needs to be replaced with fresher players. Umar Gul as well had gone for too many runs in the recent past and needs some tuning. On the other hand India needs to think on careful use of their medium pace options (they don't have much). Indian batting looks good except occasional mass suicidal acts. Hope to see Yuvraj setting up in the groove because he can be a match winner very easily. Little tuning in overall unit should make them more challenging team. Overall not an expected close finish but it's a game and we need to leave to the game only.

Why is it so that all WC matches against India, be it ODIs or T20s, we lose like this while in overall records we win more matches than they do? Are our players on indian wages? The way they batted, specially Hafeez and Malik, shows what they really wanted to attain. And then what a pathetic bowling we have these days. Umar Gul, Junaid and Bhatti all were poorer than even indian seamers. Bhatti, with his extra short bowling was a no goer. This team doesn't merit to win a single match in the group. They can't just pray for a Afridi fluke in every match, it will only happen once a year as does the experience show. Last but not least, for God sake get rid of Malik.

It's not as much as we fell, it was more that we were thrown over a cliff by India. Well done India, clearly the better side.
Even our bowlers, besides Ajmal, looked as bad as our batting lineup. Gul looks out of form while I'm still trying to figure out what exactly has K Akmal and Malik accomplished to deserve a spot on this stage.
Afridi was also a bust, both batting and bowling, in this match. No worries though, he'll show up in one in very 10 matches and all will be forgiven.

The contest between India and Pakistan are so few and far in between that I felt a bit emotional to see the teams play. It felt like seeing a close relative after a long time. Congrats to India, they were deserved winners and their win was never in doubt. Pakistan on the other hand went into the match defeated. When the Captain is as inconsistent as he is there is very little hope. With matches coming up against sides like Australia (who look to be the favorites given their batting strength) and West-Indies who beat India in a warm up match and are looking second favorites, there is little to no chance Pakistan will make it to the next round. Dreamers however can dream right?

My Analysis:
Pakistan:
Pakistan should have put 20 more runs on the world. Why didnt this happen?
Because Sohaib Maqsood needs to be bat at number 3 as he is a clean striker of the ball.
Additionally Afridi should also come up the order at number 4.
It was bad for Kamran Akmal to get run out as he usually gets fast runs.
On bowling side, Ajmal alone cant win matches if the runs are not on the board.
So Umar Gul can be replaced by Sohail Tanveer and Anwar Ali should be brought in as all arounder instead of Bhatti to see if the new combo works better.
Also Junaid Khan should bowl around the wicket for right handers in T20's.
Good to see pakistan play a specialist wicketkeeper in this format atleast.
Fielding needs to improve as well "Catches win Matches".
India:
Dhawan threw away his wicket even when under no pressure.
Yuvraj needs to drink Hamdard Cinkara and wake up after entering the batting crease!
Fielding was pretty good except for 1-2 catches.
Shami can bowl more yorkers in T20.
Batting hasnt been tested in depth yet as this match was low scoring.
Good Start, plenty to play for.
Any team can eliminate another in this format.
Well done to India, the Calmness and Order is seen once again as MS Dhoni is back at the helm. Well done MS

Hafeez & misbah ---- here are some crucial points 1. these two foolish always think current pace bowling attacks are similar with legendary Waqar, Wasim & Shoaib Akhter ! what a poor concept & prediction ! 2. Hafeez & Misbah never supports leg[ wrist] spinners someone like Zulfiqar Babar, Abdur Rehman & even Shoaib malik should have been given ball to bowl today, but Hafeez mistook again as like as Misbah does always 3 . Hafeez & Misbah ---- they only perform well when their performance are going down to be questionable as they could try their best to stay in the national team 4 . Hafeez & Misbah should learn from their mistaken lessons of losing match & to totally follow Dhoni, Michael Clark & South African players who are real professional to operate the match & their individual teams like a disciplined controlled way .

Well done India.This match clearly depicted that Pakistan choked. They played like an ODI inning in the first 15 overs, which is not going to help. Also read an interesting stat in cricinfo which is given below,

BTW Pakistan has beaten India on more than that 'one' occasion that you are quoting. As far as Pakistan is concerned, the usual 'batting woes' cost them this game. Knowing that India, who have a batting powerhouse at their disposal, can easily chase down even a 150+ total, they should have planned it accordingly after losing the toss and being mindful of the dew factor. Afridi was sent very late alongwith Sohaib Maqsood, both of whom came after Shoaib Malik, who, alongwith Hafeez, played too many dot balls (which is a crime in T20s), thus, putting Afridi under undue pressure to bail out Pakistan. Moreover, the much-hyped bowling was mishandled as Gul was sent in after Junaid and they both proved to be too expensive in their allotted time-frame..........so, wrong timing! Overall, there is a bunch of mistakes that Pakistan has to learn from as the trend and approach of most of the other teams is quite different from theirs.

Congrats to India. I am a Pak fan, but India were fantastic. They got the job done. Only worrying thing for India is the fielding. As for Pak, a bad performance in EVERY department. Very worrying. There was no aggression at all. And what on earth is Shoaib Malik doing in the side? He is completely out of his depth. I am worried for Pak team. Very big shortage of world class players at the moment.

Umar gul should not be in the team. He is a very expensive bowler. Pl look at his statistics in all formats & it will be proved he is very expensive. I wonder how come he is still in all formats. If this practice continue then Pakistan can not improve. Pl select the team on merit not on sifarish.
Also Sohaib Malik inclusion does not justify instead of him Fawad aalam should be there & find a place forYounus Khan. He & Misbah only reliable batsman in the team. Hafeez plays lot of politics in the team that's why we are not improving.

PAKISTAN has a basic problem with their approach in all limited over games. Where as all other teams accerelate in the first overs, our batsmen play as if they are playing a test match and then they always expect that Afridi and Umar Akmal will catch up with the SR with some 15 ball 50s. The approach is a mere deffence way to actually lose the match before even it is started. Consequently pakistan rarely scores more than 150. The worst part of it is, that as soon as one wicket falls, guys like Hafeez and Shoaib start blocking even the bowler who should be hit for boundries. Such a big pressure situation is created by the upper order that middle order can't find its feet to find the remidies. This approach has lost us so many matches, and those which we eventuelly win are then only due to a fluke or an extraordinary innings in the late order, just as afridi played in the Asia cup. The problem here is that such flukes do not happen every day. The selectors and the coaches are totally out of their minds not to ammend the problems. On the bowling side, Junaid has never a T20 bowler and his states of rare wickets and heavy punishments are prove of it. I am disaapointed with Bhatti who went on to bowl extra short against India. Umar Gul needs to play club cricket at most on his form.

Could we have imagined a few years ago that India and Pakistan will play cricket in Bangladesh. Its a subcontinental affair. Pakistan misfired today, but when they do get into their elements, it rains sixes and wickets.
India was more disciplined, Pakistan wayward. The response from their countrymen however balanced. Wish we could see more such games played in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh. Wish these boundaries become irrelevant for our future generations.

I would rather throw Hafeez and Shoaib Malik out and play Misbah and Younis. These two have lesser possibility to succeed and their SR is no way better than Misbah and Younis. I hate the faces Umar Gul make after getting hit for 4 or a 6 because it happens nearly every second ball and you can't go on these faces throughout your four overs, better learn somehting. Junaid is not a limited overs bowler. His states show that where there are very few wickets and a runs given rate is 8,8. Just guess how many wickets he has taken in last 6 limited over games, I think one.

Boring Match and Pakistan deserved to lost. It seemed they were playing a test match for 15 overs. And I dont understand whats the point of having Gul and Junaid, they hardly ever perform. Razzaq and Azhar would have been better choices. My teams for semis: SL, IND, WI and NZ.

Pakistan didn't play well today but look forward to my team performing better in next match.
As for the comments by Pakistanis, go check Indian newspaper. The negative language by the papers and indians is true to the famous line about them 'Moun mein ram ram...bagal mein chora.
Indians don't deserve to be treated with respect if they can not even mind their language. I fail to understand why we Pakistanis are kind to them on forums?
You will never see this headline in an indians newspaper for Pakistan team?

Just love the way, Indian Players and Captain treated Pakistani Team with Utter, Clinical Disdain - before, during and after the match. Even though every Indian Player looked calm, composed and mature, the underlining statement was very clear and bold, "You are a no match to us...". Now, its for indian readers to show same maturity and restrain from overeacting the way pakistanis did after Asia cup FLUKE win. After all, cricket is no WAR.

If you play good and lose than it is not a big deal. After all one team has to lose. But if you don't perform well and lose than there is something wrong. This team does not perform and after losing excuses are made. . There was dew, we were 20 runs etc. whose fault is it that you were short 20 runs. It's your own fault, you did not score the runs. You cannot rely on Afridi to score in the end. There are 20 overs and a steady rate should be maintained from the first over. New blood is needed, please bid farewell to Malik, Kamran Akmal, and Hafeez too. T20 needs an aggressive captain not Hafeez who can't score himself to justify his position in the team. He is the captain if the team. Go figure. It is very difficult that Pakistan will progress to the semi finals.

ICC is Indian board. This Pakistan side is a very week Pakistan side. ICC is corrupt, it banned 3 of best Pakistan players life time on spot fixing whereas other international players were banned for 3 to 5 matches, like Samuel from West Indies, and other Indian and Australian players. Bring the international cricket back to Pakistan, and then give us a year or two, and we will show you the talent we have in Pakistan.

The script was written before the match started with Amit Mishra's inclusion!! What a gamble that was and as in the past, it worked for Dhoni. Pakistan was clearly nervous as it was evident in their running and overall body language. What is missing is confidence and temperament as Ramiz Raja put it out while describing Kohli" he's oozing confidence" .

Come on. A maiden over, only 2 sixes, ONLY 28 runs in overs 13-18. ONLY 50 runs in the first 10 overs. What was Pakistan playing ? A test match ? Pakistan team is a joke and they deserved to lose this one.

The fact that Pakistan is historically better than India is debatable. I would contend that for about 10 years they had a huge edge ( miandad six to mid 90s). For the rest of the time the teams have been pretty even statistically with India even being slightly better.
To the Indian supporters, let's try to be the Aussies. That is the real measuring stick.

Looks like we are begging to them to allow our players in IPL. They are superior in all fronts whether in army, defense, economy, education.

Hello everyone this is my fist comment on Dawn Sports Forum, i was reading few of the comments from Pakistani fans about choices that Hafeez made. I would like to clear few things, first you guys can really blame only Hafeez, as the decision to rest or allow someone to play lies with the entire management of which captain is just a part. As far as players are concerned, i can argue for hafeez on the choices he made. K.Akmal was chosen because of his performance in warm up games and thats sharzeel was dropped. Shoib Malik is a Classic Cricketer with proper techniques and temperament which is quintessential in a T20 Game thats why he was chosen, i really don't understand why you guys are so angry at him.The batting was not that bad as you guys are complaining, its just Dhoni used his bowlers well and did not allow anyone to settle, Mishra did that job for him by picking Malik and Shehzaad at a crucial movement. Pakistan slowed down a bit during 15-17th overs and that proved costly for them, even the cameo from Maqsood did not achieve the total pakistan was looking for. Left arm spinner Babar was not allowed to play because he would have been really expensive against Indian Left handed batsmen esp. Raina in a flat b'desh pitch Truth to be told the game was like a classic chess game where Dhoni played his moves quite intelligently and hafeez lost because of defensive field settings and his strategy to bank on Ajmal every time to save him from the defeat, which i am afraid is something which put Ajmal under more pressure, at least in the first over. Both teams played quite brilliantly but a Thinker Cum Strategist Cum Captain led the way. Cheers and Good Luck to Both the teams for the tournament.

Pakistan fell, period. Not to spirited India. Due to their nerves, unprofessionalism, incompetence, and most importantly favoritism. Take the last five years of Shoaib Malik, Kamran Akmal, Sohail Tanvir, and some others and do some statistics. I bet you will find that they failed 80% of the time. What you expect from some one who fails 80% of the times? They lose 4 out of 5.

Najam Sethi is to blame for the inclusion of oldies. Hafeez has no clue as a captain, he is just a flaky as teenage girl deciding what clothes to wear. I think Misbah is a better captain and I won't be surprised if we don't make it to the quarter finals with this team.

So once again we managed to keep the record intact and we will try our best to let the losing record, against India in any World Cup match, remain as it is in the foreseeable future . Who takes the match seriously: its Misba ul Haq and Saeed Ajmal. The rest of the team don't care, where to bowl and where to hit shot. As far as Shoaib Malik and Suhail Tanvir are concerned they have backed by Professor sahib (Hafeez). Pakistani team played like Test match and non seriously. India deserve appreciation that both Kohli and Raina played sensible inning taking no risk.

Shahid Afridi has returned to his form after being out of form in Asia cup. He is back to #1 ranking for easy victim for opponents. It is really sad that after 25 matches one performance make us suffer for another 24 matches. Malik sahib must have a strong Pawa that he always manage to keep his place in T20 format despite being mediocre.

Surprisingly this match was uninteresting. Indo-Pak matches are loosing its sting, which is a good news and bad news simultaneously. Current Pak team reminds of 90s India team, fractured with many differences. In cricket, more than talent, it is players gelling as a unit. This problem plagued India earlier when Indian cricket was transitioning from Bombay stronghold to smaller towns and villages. When players like Kapil Dev got to centre stage from nowhere. Pak team seemed little disinterested and divided. Fielding by both sides was abysmal. I wish Australia and England add the spice and make India Pak raise their game.

The real players that take their game seriously for their country are Misbah, Younis, and Ajmal. All other players in the Pak team are "a bunch of joke". They perform 1 game out of 25 games.
Hafeez is just a mediocre player he does not deserve to be in a national team, sohail tanvir and malik have huge connection behind their selection, afridi is hit and miss, the 2 akmals fall in 1/25 category, gul is unfit, junaik k needs to hop less and focus on speed and lenght of ball, bhatti and anwar ali are just not quite ready either.
I do see potential in ahmed shezad, maqsood and nasir jamshed (who is mia).

The match was expected to be close. But Pakistan team just did not put enough runs on the board. As an Indian supporter, I have admired the bowling attack of Pakistan, and still felt that Pakistan may make a match of it after all. Having followed Pakistan team's performance a bit, from an outside perspective I still am utterly confused with some people blaming Umar Akmal. He has got lots of potential, and will surely win many matches for Pakistan.
The problem, I believe lies with the mindset, given that there is no dearth of talent in Pakistan. There is absolutely no need to block so much if a wicket falls, Pakistani batsmen have to learn to rotate the strike and get the scoreboard ticking. Low run rate puts a lot of pressure on the lower order, and you cannot expect Afridi or Umar Akmal to bail you out of it everytime. During commentary, Wasim Akram made an excellent point about the point where they should be after 15 overs. Atleast 105 runs should be on the board so that lower order do not have to slog everything. This is one point where Indian batsmen excel, which is to keep the runs coming.
The Indian bowling is not very strong, so if you cannot take advantage of it, you are not helping yourself in any way.
Having said all that, it's just an outsiders perspective on the strategies involved in the Pakistani team. it's just a loss for pakistan, and one win for India. Lots of matches are left, and I expect Pakistan to perform very well given the magician spinner they have in their ranks.
We Indians love our batting, and we surely admire Pakistani bowling ( given the sorry state of affairs in Indian bowling ) :P
All the best to Pakistan cricket team. Dont know where all this animosity between teams came from, but we sure love our neighbours and want them to perform well. Well, who doesnt like watching quality fast bowlers in great flow ;)

As an Indian, I remember throughout the 90s, India would lose to Pak without fail....just because it was Pakistan. IT was a mindset. The thought of Miandad, Imran Khan, Waqar and Wasim would send shivers down the spine. Indians of all hues and stripes (though patriotic) would always nurse a profound respect for the cricketing greats from Pakistan. That feeling is not there now. That is a fact. The quality of cricket, attitude, skill and the tenacity is probably waning from Pak cricket. It wasn't that bad even 10 years ago. But now that feeling is palpable. The Asia Cup win was good. It gave brief glimpses of the Pak cricket of the past. The last ball six from Miandad was revisited briefly. It was a good match. But overall, it would take a long time for Pak cricket to get its mojo back. Wishing you good luck!!

It was a good match for India but overall it was a one-sided affair. I wish it was a close match, like the recent match in Asia cup where PAK won in the last over. Also I don't feel there is any tension or any war-like aggression in players of both teams (which is good). Its a game and one has to win and other has to loose. Also I feel India and Pak, with same type of people, can prove to be the most friendly nations in the world. Though people of both the countries are very friendly with each other, its the politicians that are bent upon creating tensions. Anyhow best wishes for both the teams, I hope they both can make it to the next stage by beating AUS, WI and BAN.

Very well said. It is a game after all. T20 is a mixture of skills, luck and quick silver thinking. The performance of both the teams were nothing to talk about. Just that Pakistan suffered the initial jitters. Not sure how India would have performed had they been batting first. India too stuttered in the middle when Yuvraj and Dhawan got out. I am sure Pakistan will do better in their next outing. Would urge the fans to support this team. There is plenty of potential. Please give them a breather and let them evolve.

I wonder why Pakistan does not play good cricket. Cricket is a very easy game. All a batsman has to do is hit the ball so that it crosses the boundary line.They can do better if they strike the ball lofting it over the line. That will fetch them more runs. And better the bowlers should bowl in such a manner that the ball strikes the wickets. See! It is as simple as that.

Keep on playing Ukmals, Shoaib Malik and Hafeez, and Pakistani will never win a match. PCB Chairman, selectors, managers, coaches as well as player are selected on personal liking and disliking. They either have no knowledge of game or are of mediocre level. We have a poor standard of domestic cricket and incapable management structure, the result cannot be different. In addition to that unless a very strict action is taken against the gamblers nothing will improve. Get rid of perchie and gambling mafia or ban cricket.

What a thrashing it was. I just feel there was too much talk from the Pakistan camp, both from current and former players about Pakistan having an edge after the Asia cup victory which in itself was a very close game. All this talk added to their anxiety. On the contrary, look at the Indian camp, hardly any comments coming from their side. Something Pakistan could do well to learn from their Indian counterparts.

What happened in the past is of no relevance in sport, how we play today will decide the result. Whoever plays better on the day will win and we as spectators must applaud and appreciate it. Just want to say that these T20 matches are not worthy of being included in 'World Cup' matches. usually such super-short formats are a roll of dice. Just a few weeks back Afridi hoicked couple of sixes in the last over and won the game for Pak.
No self-respecting cricket enthusiast pays heed to these 20 over matches. Test cricket remains the holy grail of the sport, and the only real 'World Cup' is of 50-over matches.

It was a match to look out for but Pakistan just didn't turn up!! I know many passionate pak supporters will be disheartened but the pace of t20 is such that it is hard to do mistake twice. Once by having their slowest power play overs and second by losing umar and malik quickly. With 130 on any subcontinent track even wasim and waqar couldn't have saved the grace!!

Believe it or not ,Ironically n especially with the current selection and fallible mindset Pak cricket is participating in this important tournament they are surely the weakest team ..mean see their brittle batting line up,their fielding ,dropping catches on repeated basis,running between the wickets, Malik and Kamran's inclusion, Fast bowlers inability to take early wickets and going for plenty and now i am fearing for the worst which is gonna happen which is Saeed Ajmal is gonna have a nightmarish tournament ...Aaron Finch,Chris Gayle and Kushal Perrera is gonna kill this bowler which you'll see soon... one could see the how much the pressure is on the players, they just could not even judge when to run or not, Hafeez himself almost got himself or Ahmad run out and instead blaming Ahmed for not running on his bad call... Pak just perished to the pressure and could not produce, Hafeez should be brave enough to admit, there is nothing wrong. I wonder what is heavy weight management with the team is doing, they need to tell players to be cool on their head, Kami got good start but the way he got run reminded me of my son's under 10 team running between the wicket. Pak need to come out of pressure to play otherwise they will just win anything, Hafeez & Team, disaapointed nation and be sorry!!!

the difference with indian cricketers is the confidence. I know a cricketer who got into Ranji for the first time and playing IPL for first season in couple of months. He's already made more than a crore and planning to buy a BMW. BCCI has ensured that even domestic players make huge money. So the focus of the player is no more on survival but only on cricket. Ofcourse some cricketers get wayward, but this is where mentors like dravid who are perfect gentlemen fit in. they are guiding these youngsters even off the field. a better team won... sadly Pakistan didn't play professionally, the fighting spirit of the earlier years was completely missing...The new generation is dripping in pessimism enshrouded and spread by our overly professional, rating hungry media...... who don't fail to point anything wrong but fail to highlight anything good as well..
Don't worry Pakistani team, there is another flight for every shaheen...is-se agae jahan aur bhi haein...

India winning wc match against pakistan has become stereotypical all because Pakistani players even though talented cannot handle the nerve wracking responsibility of playing against India due to prodigious burden of expectations and demands from domestic match viewers !

No need for Indians to get carried away. India still does not have depth in bowling like Sri Lanka. Also what is Yuvraj doing in the team? Better luck Pak. Its just a game. Treat it like one. Win or loose. Its just a game. Enjoy the game. Both India or Pak teams have weaknesses and they need to look at them.

This is typical sub-continent mentality.. when a team loses a match of 3 hours they curse.. scold.. blast at the players and yet they dont care of keeping country's future and their future in the hands of corrupt politicians for 5 years!!! Grow up guys.. bother about what really deserves your attention. its just a sport..
