CHARSADDA/PESHAWAR: Police on Sunday arrested the medical superintendent of district headquarters hospital, Charsadda and his son for firing on the hospital premises in which two relatives of paramedical staff were injured.

The incident occurred as a result of a row between the MS, Dr Muhammad Khan Afridi, and the paramedical staff over reinstatement of some staff members in the hospital.

The doctor and the paramedics had lodged cases in the local police station against each other after they fell out over the issue a few days ago.

Eyewitnesses said the doctor resorted to indiscriminate firing in the hospital’s emergency ward, injuring Sohail and Imran, relatives of some paramedical staff members.

The injured Sohail told police he had come to the hospital to meet his father, who is employed in the hospital, when the doctor and his son exchanged harsh words with some paramedics and fired in the emergency ward.

After registering case, the police arrested Dr Afridi and his son, Tariq, and began investigation.

Dr Afridi was suspended after the incident and Dr Mushtaq was made acting MS of the hospital.

Meanwhile, health workers announced to observe complete boycott on March 27 (Thursday) in different hospitals across the Peshawar division against the firing incident.

The decision was taken at a meeting of the coordination council at Lady Reading Hospital in Peshawar on Sunday.

The meeting was largely attended by health workers, and employees of different government departments.

On the occasion, the Provincial Paramedical Association president Johar Ali alleged that MS of Charsadda hospital had fired upon children of the health workers, but no action was taken against him.

The meeting demanded of the provincial government to terminate the MS, otherwise the government employees would hold sit-in outside Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Assembly.
