THATTA: Speakers at a rally warned on Friday that if the government did not distribute land among landless peasants, especially women, in order to tackle food insecurity, entire rural Sindh might soon face Thar like situation.
They said that development would be meaningless unless the government addressed the root cause of poverty and food insecurity by giving land to the landless, especially women.
They said that majority Pakistan’s rural population was landless while the country’s political and administrative systems were dominated by feudal lords who had dodged all land reforms over the years.
The rally demanded political parties include land reforms in their manifestos.
They called for amendments to Sindh Tenancy Act and opposed corporate agriculture farming.
The rally was organised by the National Peasants Coalition of Pakistan in collaboration with the Society for Conservation and Protection of Environment and OXFAM.
