KARACHI: The Deputy Inspector General of Traffic Police of Karachi, Mohammad Arif Hanif, said on Sunday that a large number of road accident victims either had lack of road sense or poor knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.

He added that, therefore, it was necessary that initiatives for safety of road users were taken and a special traffic rules awareness campaign and educational programmes were launched throughout the city.

All SSPs of traffic districts are hereby directed to launch ‘Traffic awareness and education week’ between April 21 and 27 in a manner of competition among all traffic districts of Karachi.

Speaking to his officers, the DIG instructed that during this special week, camps equipped with public address system were established, pamphlets and guidance booklets were distributed; seminars were held at schools while walks were also organised for public awareness.

He asked officials to visit public bus terminals and deliver lectures to drivers and conductors.

He also directed officials to display banners having road safety slogans on all important roads.

He said that gift hampers such as colour boxes, ball pens, caps and badges would be given to road users, particularly to schoolchildren, after asking them questions about traffic rules and regulations.

He asked the officials to promote the service of the Sindh Police FM Radio Channel-88.6 and Shorts Messaging Service (SMS-8655) recently initiated by the traffic police. —PPI
